Start by identifying what is stopping sign-in
Your PlayStation sign-in ID is the email address associated with the account. If you can still open that inbox, password recovery may be self-service. If you have lost access to your email or required verification method—or account details changed without your permission—PlayStation directs you to its Online Assistant rather than an unofficial recovery service.

Recover a forgotten password
- Open PlayStation’s password-reset instructions and choose Trouble Signing in? > Recover Your Account in Account Management.
- Enter the account’s sign-in ID—the email address tied to the account—and follow the secure link sent to that inbox. PlayStation says the email can take a few minutes to arrive; check spam or junk if it does not appear.
- If you use a PS5 or PS4, the console also has a sign-in recovery route. Follow the console-specific steps on PlayStation’s password-reset page.
If the email address was entered incorrectly or is not the account’s sign-in ID, the reset message will not reach the right mailbox. For a child account, only the family manager can reset the child’s password.
If your passkey is unavailable
If you have another device with the same verification method registered, use it to sign in and register a new passkey. If that is not possible, PlayStation’s stated next step is its Online Assistant. For a passkey issue on a device or service where PlayStation recommends password sign-in, follow its instructions to switch back to password sign-in rather than repeatedly retrying an unavailable passkey.

If you cannot receive a two-step verification code
PlayStation sends the code to the registered mobile number or generates it in the authenticator app. For a missing SMS, try these checks:
- Select Resend Code and allow a few minutes for delivery.
- Restart the phone, make sure airplane mode is off, and check that you have mobile signal.
- If you saved a backup code, enter one instead. PlayStation provides 10 backup codes; each can be used once.
If you have no unused backup code and cannot access the registered phone number, contact PlayStation through the two-step verification support instructions. Do not try to bypass two-step verification.

If you cannot access the email or account details changed
If you cannot open the inbox needed for a password reset or verification, have forgotten the sign-in email, or cannot receive the required verification information, use PlayStation’s Online Assistant. The same applies if your sign-in ID, online ID, or password appears to have changed without your permission. Treat unexpected changes as a possible account compromise and use only PlayStation’s official recovery and security guidance.
If your password is right but sign-in still fails
First try signing in to Account Management in a browser. If that works but your console does not, focus on the console or its connection:

- Check for and install the latest PS5 or PS4 system software.
- Restart the console and router.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection.
- Confirm that the account’s sign-in ID email was verified. Search the inbox for “PlayStation verify.”
If the browser and console both reject sign-in after these checks, check whether the account has been suspended. PlayStation says it generally emails the reason and duration; check the sign-in email’s spam folder and use its suspension support information.

PlayStation’s recovery routes are not interchangeable: a backup code can help with a lost verification method, but it cannot restore an inaccessible email; another registered device may help with a passkey, but not a changed account email. Contact PlayStation’s Online Assistant when its instructions direct you there, especially if you cannot prove access through the email or verification method on file.
