The clerk can confirm whether the application was processed and the ballot mailed, check your address, and explain whether you can get a replacement or need to vote in person. Act promptly: the options and deadlines depend on your situation and how close Election Day is.
Check your ballot status and address
- Go to Michigan’s voter information page. Search using your name, birth month and year, and ZIP code, or use your driver’s license number.
- Open the “Absentee ballot” section to see whether the clerk received your application, when the ballot was mailed, and whether a returned ballot has been received.
- Confirm that your voter registration and mailing address are current. Michigan’s Secretary of State recommends checking them if Election Day is approaching and your ballot has not arrived.
Call your city or township clerk
Use Michigan.gov/Vote to find your local clerk. Ask whether your application was received and approved, when the ballot was sent, and which address was used. The clerk can also tell you what to do next for the election and your particular registration or address circumstances.
Ask whether the clerk can issue a replacement
If the clerk mailed your ballot but you never received it, Michigan guidance says you may ask the clerk to spoil the original ballot and issue a replacement. Contact the clerk rather than trying to submit a replacement request through an unofficial service.
Michigan publishes a 4 p.m. Monday-before-Election-Day deadline for a written, signed request to spoil an unsubmitted ballot; the request must be received in person by the clerk. Ask the clerk immediately how to submit the request and whether this procedure applies to your case.

Know the separate in-person application deadline
The deadline for the spoil request is not the same as the deadline for applying in person for an absentee ballot. Michigan’s general absentee voting information says a currently registered voter may apply in person at the clerk’s office until 4 p.m. the day before Election Day. These are different procedures, so confirm with your clerk which option applies before you go.
If there is too little time for a mailed replacement, ask the clerk about in-person absentee voting or other in-person voting options for your situation. Availability and the right route can depend on your registration and address status and the election.

If your ballot arrives, return it on time
For most Michigan voters, a completed absentee ballot must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day to count. The state advises mailing at least two weeks before Election Day to reduce the risk of postal delays. Military and overseas voters follow separate postmark and receipt rules; use Michigan’s specialized guidance or contact the clerk for those deadlines.
