If your fantasy hockey goalie is a game-time decision, first find out exactly when your lineup locks. Then check the latest starting-goalie report and weigh its certainty against your backup, your league’s scoring, and the time left to make a move. “Projected,” “likely,” and “confirmed” do not mean the same thing, and no single start-or-sit rule fits every league.
1. Find your lineup lock deadline
Open your league’s lineup settings and check whether goalie slots lock with the full lineup, individually before a player’s game, or under a custom schedule. Make the decision using your league’s actual deadline—not a general rule or another platform’s settings.
For example, CBS Sports Free Fantasy Hockey’s 2026–27 rules use weekly lineups. Each player’s deadline is five minutes before the first NHL game that player’s team is scheduled to play in the scoring week; once the week begins, that week’s lineup cannot be changed. CBS states: “The deadline for setting your lineup is five (5) minutes before the first NHL game in which each individual NHL player in your fantasy team is scheduled to play for the applicable weekly period.” This describes CBS’s game, not Yahoo, ESPN, Fantrax, or a custom league.
2. Check what the goalie report actually says
Look for a current report from a credible source, and distinguish a projection from a sourced expectation or a confirmation. Left Wing Lock defines its labels this way in its starting-goalie FAQ:

- Projected: an educated guess without a source.
- Likely: a source suggests the goalie might start, but has not confirmed it.
- Confirmed: one or more sources state the goalie will start.
If the service links to its underlying report, open it. A label is useful shorthand, but the report’s source and timing help you judge how much weight to give it. Left Wing Lock reports a 99.9% multi-season accuracy rate for goalies it labels Confirmed; the service does not specify the years covered in the cited FAQ, and that figure is its own report rather than an independently validated statistic.
For a date-specific reference, NHL.com’s fantasy index listed projected lineups and starting goalies for October 3, 2026. Game-day information can change, so check again as your lock approaches. NHL.com’s 2026–27 goalie rankings help with season-level valuation; they are not live confirmation that a goalie will start a particular game.

3. Compare the uncertain goalie with your alternative
Use the factors that matter to your roster and scoring, rather than treating uncertainty as an automatic reason to bench a goalie. Compare the options on these points:
- Report strength and recency: Is the start merely projected, reported likely, or confirmed—and how recently was the report updated?
- Time until lock: Is there time to wait for a stronger report, or must you decide now?
- Expected workload and goalie situation: How many starts are plausible, and what does the team’s goalie rotation suggest?
- Matchup and goal support: Consider the opponent and the team’s projected offensive support.
- Injury concerns: Factor in any current injury information rather than relying only on a season ranking.
- Roster cost: What do you give up by benching either goalie, including the possibility that the alternative also does not play?
NHL.com says its season goalie valuations consider past production, goalie situations, anticipated starts, projected team goal support, injury history, and other factors. Those are useful comparison inputs, but a ranking is not a substitute for a current start report.

4. Apply your league’s goalie scoring
Check the scoring page before deciding how much risk to accept. Leagues may reward wins, saves, and shutouts, penalize goals against, or use ratio categories; the same start can help or hurt depending on those settings.
For illustration, CBS Sports Free Fantasy Hockey’s 2026–27 rules award 5 points for a win, 3 for a shutout, 0.2 points per save, and minus 1 point per goal against. The same rules describe standard roto goalie categories as wins, save percentage, and goals-against average. NHL.com’s 2026–27 fantasy goalie guide identifies wins, goals-against average, save percentage, and shutouts as standard categories. These examples show why your own league settings—not a generic goalie ranking—should guide the choice.

5. Decide before the deadline, then recheck if time allows
If the report is still uncertain at lock, choose based on the evidence available, your alternative, and the scoring or categories you need. There is no universally correct choice for every game-time decision. If your platform still allows a change, recheck a current starting-goalie report close to the deadline; once the slot locks, later news may not help your fantasy lineup.
