First find out whether only the game has stopped responding or the whole computer or console is frozen. A game-only freeze usually calls for game, launcher, or software checks; a system-wide lockup, reboot, or shutdown points toward drivers, heat, power, memory, storage, or other system instability. Start with the safe recovery steps below, then follow the branch that matches what you see.
Recover safely when the game freezes
If Windows still responds
- Wait briefly if the game is loading or compiling shaders. A short pause after a game or graphics-driver update can be temporary; an indefinite or recurring lockup is not.
- Press
Alt+Tabto switch applications. If Windows responds, pressCtrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, select the game, and choose End task. - If Task Manager does not appear above the full-screen game, press
Ctrl+Alt+Deleteand select Task Manager. You can also switch focus and tryAlt+F4. - Restart the PC before trying more involved fixes.
A forced shutdown can lose unsaved progress or interrupt a save write, so use the physical power button only when nothing else responds. Do not make repeated hard shutdowns your routine fix.
If the display is stuck but Windows may still be running
Press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to ask Windows to reset the graphics driver. The screen may blink or make a brief sound. This is a recovery attempt, not a lasting repair.
If the PC blue-screens, reboots, or powers off
Record the stop code, whether the PC rebooted or shut down, what you were doing, and any recent driver, Windows, BIOS, hardware, or overclocking change. A system crash is a different problem from a game closing to desktop; follow Microsoft’s guidance for unexpected restarts and stop-code errors.

Classify the freeze before changing settings

Low frame rate, stutter, a game crash, a display-driver reset, and a complete system lock are related but not interchangeable symptoms. Note whether audio continued, other apps responded, and the issue affects one title or several.
Try the low-risk fixes first
Restart, update, and check for a known issue
Restart the PC or console, then check for game and launcher updates and pending operating-system updates. For Windows graphics, chipset, audio, or motherboard drivers, use the GPU or computer manufacturer’s official support channel. A supported current driver can resolve compatibility issues, but if the freeze began right after a driver update, a rollback may be more informative than installing another new version. Check the publisher’s status or known-issues page after a major patch.
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking system requirements, updating Windows and drivers, verifying game files, and disabling nonessential software: Steam troubleshooting.
Check requirements and storage
Compare your actual CPU, GPU, memory, and operating system with the game’s requirements. A system near minimum specifications may run short on memory or graphics capacity at demanding settings. Make sure the system and game drives have room for updates and temporary files; there is no universal free-space figure that applies to every game, launcher, and patch.

Verify or repair the game installation
File repair replaces missing or damaged installation files in many cases. It does not necessarily fix a corrupted save, broken settings file, mod changes, cloud-sync conflict, or defective game patch.

Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files (or the equivalent section in your Steam version).
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game and choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
Epic recommends verification for PC games that crash or perform incorrectly: Epic Games troubleshooting.
EA app
- Open Library and find the game.
- Select its Manage icon.
- Choose Repair.
EA also recommends closing background applications and testing frame-rate caps or V-Sync for freezing: EA crashing and freezing help. Launcher labels can change; if a path differs, look for the game’s manage, repair, or installed-files options.
Isolate overlays, mods, and background software
Temporarily disable nonessential software rather than uninstalling it. Candidates include Discord and Steam overlays, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD recording/overlays, MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner, RGB and motherboard utilities, capture or streaming tools, VPNs, macro software, third-party antivirus game modes, mods, reshade injectors, and unofficial launchers.
- Disable one category at a time, so the result is meaningful.
- Reboot if the software installs a driver or overlay component.
- Repeat the same in-game action that previously froze.
- After finding a likely conflict, re-enable items gradually to confirm it.
If simply closing apps does not isolate the issue, use a Windows clean boot to start with a minimal set of startup programs and services, then test the game. Microsoft describes clean-start troubleshooting in its Windows troubleshooting guidance. If antivirus seems involved, use its documented game-mode or exclusion controls for a brief test and restore normal protection promptly; do not leave security software disabled.
Anti-cheat components can conflict with some overlays or system tools. Do not disable anti-cheat unless the game and publisher permit an offline test.

Reduce graphics load as a diagnostic test
Restore a stable preset or lower demanding settings temporarily. If the game stops freezing, that is useful evidence of a load-sensitive problem, but it does not identify the root cause on its own.
- Lower texture quality if video memory (VRAM) is close to capacity.
- Reduce ray tracing, shadows, foliage, crowd density, and view distance.
- Temporarily disable frame generation or experimental upscaling modes.
- Cap frame rate below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, or test V-Sync.
- If the game officially supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, test the other mode.
- Try borderless windowed instead of exclusive full-screen; disable HDR briefly if the issue coincides with display-mode changes.
On a laptop with hybrid graphics, check that the game is using the intended discrete GPU through Windows graphics preferences and the laptop maker’s instructions. A low-FPS or stutter problem is not the same as a full lockup; reducing graphics cannot repair a failing drive, unstable RAM, bad power delivery, or every driver fault.

Check temperature, power, memory, and storage when games keep freezing
Temperature and cooling
During a session, monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, GPU hotspot where available, fan speed, clock speeds, GPU use and VRAM, and system memory or committed memory. Compare readings with the specifications for your exact CPU or GPU rather than relying on one universal temperature cutoff. Investigate thermal throttling, unusually high readings, a fan that is not turning, blocked vents, or shutdowns under sustained load.
Clear dust from vents and heatsinks, and keep laptop intake and exhaust unobstructed. A freeze after sustained play can be consistent with heat, but only measurements or clear cooling faults establish that as the likely cause.
Power and stability settings
Check that desktop GPU power connectors are fully seated and that the power supply is appropriate for the full system. Test at stock CPU, GPU, and memory settings: temporarily remove aggressive overclocks or undervolts, and return BIOS memory profiles such as XMP or EXPO to default if instability started after enabling them. A PC that powers off or reboots under load needs system-stability investigation, not just game repair.

Memory, drive, and recent hardware changes
If multiple apps show corruption, installs repeatedly fail verification, or a drive disappears, investigate storage health rather than endlessly reinstalling the game. A recent RAM, GPU, PSU, motherboard, or drive change is an important clue. Memory profiles can pass some workloads yet fail in games; stock settings help distinguish that possibility. For display artifacts, also test another cable or display and return GPU tuning to stock.

These commands target Windows component and protected-system-file corruption, not game files, saves, or game code. Use them if simpler title-specific steps fail and Windows instability is plausible. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the following commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannowand let the scan reach 100% before closing the window.
Microsoft’s prescribed order is DISM followed by SFC: Use System File Checker to repair missing or corrupted system files. If SFC reports no integrity violations, it did not find protected Windows-file corruption. If it repaired files, restart and retest. If some files could not be repaired, consult the CBS log and Microsoft’s repair guidance; if the requested operation could not be performed, Microsoft recommends retrying in Safe Mode. Use Windows logs to find a pattern
- Task Manager: check resource use and close a hung game.
- Event Viewer: inspect application and system errors around the time of the freeze.
- Reliability Monitor: review a timeline of application failures and Windows incidents.
- System Information: run
msinfo32to gather hardware, components, and software-environment details. Microsoft explains the System Information tool. - DxDiag: collect graphics, audio, and DirectX details often requested by game support.
- Minidumps: relevant when Windows blue-screens; they are not usually created for an ordinary game-only crash.
Record what failed and when, rather than relying on a generic description such as “it freezes.” For example, note whether a particular save consistently freezes after a specific update and driver version.

If just one game remains affected after updates, file repair, a no-mod/no-overlay test, settings reset, and storage checks, a reinstall is reasonable. Before uninstalling:

- Back up local saves and confirm whether cloud saves are enabled and synchronized.
- Export settings or keybindings if the game supports it.
- Record mods, launch arguments, and the install location.
- Make sure you can sign back in to the relevant account.
Uninstalling can complicate cloud-save conflicts or remove local data, and reinstalling will not fix a driver fault, overheating, unstable hardware, Windows corruption, or a broken patch distributed by the publisher.
Console steps: PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch
Keep the first steps non-destructive. Menu labels and recovery options differ by model and software version; do not initialize a console, format a card, or select a reset option as an early troubleshooting step.
PlayStation
- Close the game and restart the console.
- Install available system and game updates, and check the game’s official support page and PlayStation service status.
- If the game is on external storage, test internal storage where the model permits.
- If only one title is affected, consider reinstalling it after confirming save backup or sync status.
Use Safe Mode repair options only after checking instructions for the exact PlayStation model and the effect of the selected option. PlayStation’s PC games troubleshooting page also advises checking Windows updates, drivers, internet/server status, and reinstalling when necessary; those PC instructions are not console repair steps.
Xbox
- Quit the game from the dashboard and restart the console.
- Install console and game updates and check Xbox service status.
- If the issue affects one game, reinstall that title after confirming save synchronization.
- If several games freeze or the console powers off, contact Xbox Support or the game publisher.
Nintendo Switch
- Close the software, restart the console, and install system and game updates.
- Check whether one title or multiple titles are affected.
- If the software is on microSD, test internal storage when practical.
- Redownload or reinstall only after checking which save data is backed up or supported.
- Contact Nintendo Support if the console itself repeatedly becomes unresponsive.
When to stop and contact support
Seek hardware or platform support rather than continuing trial-and-error if the PC repeatedly blue-screens, locks across multiple games, powers off under load, shows persistent artifacts, has a failed fan, or reports drive errors. Stop using equipment and seek qualified service if there is a burning smell or other sign of electrical damage.
For a game or platform support request, include:
- Game title and version; launcher or console model.
- Windows version/build where applicable, plus CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and driver version.
- Whether mods or overlays are installed and whether the problem affects one game or several.
- The approximate time, exact reproduction steps, whether audio continued, and whether the display recovered.
- Error, crash, or stop code; recent updates or hardware changes; and relevant logs or DxDiag/System Information details.
A reproducible pattern, such as a freeze at the same point after a named patch with a particular driver, gives a publisher more useful information than a general report.

- Keep vents clear, clean dust periodically, and maintain adequate free storage.
- Use stable settings while diagnosing; avoid permanent overclocks and unnecessary stacks of overlays or monitoring tools.
