If a mod stops working after a game update, treat it as a compatibility problem until you isolate the cause. Check the game, mod, loader and dependency versions; protect your save; then test the game with mods disabled. Update or restore mods only when their creators confirm compatibility with your installed game version.
Why can an update break a mod?
A game patch can change the code, files or systems a mod depends on. A mod that worked before may then cause a crash, missing content, errors or unexpected behavior. Electronic Arts says of The Sims 4 that a mod that caused no problems before could cause them after an update (EA Help). Bethesda Support similarly warns that Skyrim Special Edition Creations and Mods may not work properly after a game update until their creators update them (Bethesda Support).
Compatibility is specific to the game version and often to the mod loader and required dependencies, too. The newest mod file is not necessarily the right one for your game: check its creator’s compatibility notes before installing it.
Before changing anything, protect your save
Record the game version, platform, mod-loader version and versions of the affected mods. Make a separate copy of important saves before removing or changing custom content. Backup methods and save locations vary by game, so use that game’s own instructions rather than guessing at folders.

Pay particular attention to games where a save can be altered when content is absent. For The Sims 4, EA instructs players testing with mods disabled to exit without saving; saving before re-enabling custom content may remove that content from the save (EA’s Sims 4 guidance).
How to troubleshoot a broken mod
- Check compatibility information. Visit the mod creator’s page and any maintained compatibility list for the game. Confirm that the mod supports your exact game version, and check its stated loader and dependency requirements. Stardew Valley’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the compatibility list, updating mods and SMAPI, and watching SMAPI’s console for update alerts (Stardew Valley Wiki). Larian also recommends keeping mods updated (Larian Support).
- Disable mods using the game’s supported method. Use the in-game mod manager or the game’s documented removal steps; do not delete files or configuration folders based on instructions for a different game. Restart and try to reproduce the same problem with mods disabled.
- Read the result of that test. If the issue stops, a mod or interaction among mods is implicated. If it continues, investigate the base game or platform instead. Larian, EA and Bethesda all recommend isolating mods as part of troubleshooting (Larian; EA; Bethesda).
- Update only items confirmed for your game version. Follow the creator’s instructions for replacing or reinstalling the mod, loader and dependencies. Some mods require a full replacement; the correct procedure depends on the game and mod (Stardew Valley troubleshooting; EA’s Sims 4 guidance).
- Test as you restore your mod setup. Add back only confirmed-compatible mods, in small groups or one at a time, and test after each change. If the issue returns, the last mod or group you restored is a useful lead. Stardew Valley’s guide specifically recommends reinstalling XNB mods one at a time and testing after each installation; EA’s troubleshooting flow also guides players in identifying problematic mods (Stardew Valley Wiki; EA Help).
- If the game still fails with mods off, follow base-game repair guidance. For a Steam game, Steam Support’s file-verification steps can check the installation when files are missing or the game crashes (Steam Support). File verification checks installed game files; it does not establish that a mod is compatible.
- Ask the mod creator when the mod is the trigger. Use the creator’s preferred support channel and include the game and mod versions, steps to reproduce the problem, and any relevant error log. Larian says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods and directs players to mod authors when disabling a mod resolves the issue (Larian Support).
Should you wait for a mod update or roll the game back?
For most players, the least risky choice is to stay on the current game version, leave the incompatible mod disabled and wait for the creator to confirm support. You may be able to play without mods in the meantime, but follow the game’s save precautions before launching a modded save without its custom content.

Using an older game version may preserve an older mod setup, but it is an option only when the game’s publisher or platform provides a supported version. Stardew Valley’s guide documents specific legacy-version options for its 1.6 transition, including a Steam legacy branch and previous-version downloads on GOG; those steps are not universal (Stardew Valley Wiki). Valve has also described Workshop version-management features that depend on developers and mod authors configuring version support (Steam announcement).
| Choice | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on the latest game version | You want the current patch, or no supported rollback is available. | Whether the creator has confirmed your mod supports the current game version; whether you can safely leave it disabled or play without it. |
| Use an older game version | The publisher or platform explicitly offers a supported older version and you need to preserve an older mod setup. | Whether your platform offers that version, whether the mod creator supports it, and whether your save and other mods work with it. |
Compatibility can take time. The Stardew Valley Wiki reports that 44% of SMAPI mods were ready on day one of Stardew Valley 1.6’s launch; this is a historical figure for that game’s 1.6 release, not a current or industry-wide measure (Stardew Valley Wiki).
