If a game reports that it has run out of video memory, lower texture quality first, then test other graphics settings one at a time. If the problem is stuttering without an error, check whether the game is using the intended GPU and consider shader compilation—stutter does not automatically mean VRAM is full. The right fix depends on the game, GPU, resolution, operating system, and exact error.
First, reduce graphics-memory demand
Video memory, or VRAM, is memory on a graphics card used for graphics work. AMD describes Radeon VRAM as memory the GPU uses to render games and applications; textures and shaders are among the assets that use it. Higher texture settings can therefore increase memory demand.
- Lower texture quality. Change the texture setting by one or more steps, then restart the game if it asks you to. Test the same area or activity where the warning or hitch occurred.
- If needed, reduce other demanding settings. Lower resolution or disable ray tracing if it is enabled. Change one setting at a time where practical so you can tell what affected the symptom.
- Compare the result. If the warning stops or stuttering improves, the settings were contributing to the problem. That does not prove VRAM was the only cause, and it does not mean the same change will fix every game.
AMD reports a peak 11.7 GB VRAM use in Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, maximum settings, with ray tracing enabled. This was a specific AMD performance-lab test conducted June 28, 2023, on a Ryzen 9 7900X system with 32 GB DDR5-4800, Windows 10 Pro, a Radeon RX 6950 XT, Adrenalin Edition v23.7.1, and Smart Access Memory. It is an example of one demanding configuration, not a general game requirement or a capacity recommendation. AMD’s VRAM explanation and test details.
If the game still stutters, check other causes
Look at resource use while the symptom happens
On Windows, close programs you do not need and observe resource use in Task Manager while the game is running. Microsoft also recommends checking for Windows updates when diagnosing general PC performance problems. These are sensible checks, but they do not establish that background apps cause every game hitch. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.

Make sure the game is assigned to the intended GPU
A system with both integrated and discrete graphics may run an app on either GPU. On supported Windows 11 systems, Windows offers app-specific graphics preferences, including a high-performance option. Check the game’s preference in Windows settings if available, save the choice, then restart the game. The setting’s availability and behavior depend on the Windows version and device; Microsoft documents it in its guidance on Windows 11 graphics optimizations.
Account for integrated graphics and shared memory
Integrated graphics commonly use unified memory architecture (UMA), sharing system memory with the graphics controller rather than relying only on dedicated graphics-card memory. This means a game’s “video memory” warning may not map neatly to the dedicated-VRAM figures associated with a discrete GPU. AMD notes that some configurations can encounter missing or low-resolution textures or a GPU-requirements warning. Its instructions about disabling integrated graphics apply to certain desktop systems with both integrated and discrete graphics, not as a universal laptop fix. Check your system configuration before changing GPU settings. AMD’s UMA frame-buffer guidance.

Allow for shader compilation, especially after a driver update
Some stutter occurs while a game compiles shaders, rather than because VRAM is exhausted. NVIDIA says shader compilation is commonly performed as a game runs and is a common cause of gameplay stuttering. NVIDIA also notes that installing a driver deletes the shader cache, so the first run of a game afterward may stutter. This is a documented possibility, not proof that every hitch after an update is harmless or cache-related. NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference.
Do not apply an old Windows hotfix to a different problem
Microsoft documented a DirectX 11 “out of memory” issue on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 when a game ran fullscreen at a non-native resolution, with a targeted hotfix for that scenario. It is historical, narrowly scoped guidance—not a general fix for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 games. Microsoft’s support page describes the affected systems and conditions.

When a GPU upgrade is worth considering
Consider a GPU with more suitable dedicated VRAM only after testing lower settings and confirming what GPU the game uses. An upgrade may make sense if reduced settings resolve the issue but you want to keep higher textures, resolution, or ray tracing. VRAM capacity is only one part of the choice: compare cards for the specific game and resolution, the settings you want, overall performance, system compatibility, and budget. The evidence here does not establish a universal VRAM threshold or a particular card recommendation.

To narrow down a warning or stutter, provide the game title, GPU model, dedicated VRAM if applicable, system RAM, resolution, graphics settings, operating system, driver version, and the exact error text. Include whether the symptom began after a driver or game update, and whether lowering textures changes it. Without those details, a warning alone cannot establish whether the cause is memory capacity, GPU selection, shader compilation, another performance bottleneck, or a hardware fault.
