First identify where the problem occurs: the game may be missing from your Steam Library, unable to download or install, or installed but unable to launch. Check purchase and account access before changing files; then follow the steps for the specific failure and error message.
If the game is missing from your Library
Do not reinstall files until you know the account has access to the game. Steam recommends checking the transaction and account first.

- Check your Steam receipt email and Steam purchase history to confirm the purchase completed rather than remaining pending.
- Make sure the Steam client is signed in to the account that bought the game. If the purchase completed, sign out and back in.
- Remove Library filters and check View > Hidden Games.
If Steam shows “Pre-Load Complete,” the game files may be present without the current account owning the game or having access through Family Sharing. Confirm access before trying to install or recover files.
If the game will not download or install
Work through Steam’s general installation checks one at a time, testing the download after each change so you can identify what helped.

- Restart Steam, then restart the computer.
- In the Steam client, open Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Client labels can vary by version. Steam says clearing the cache does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in again. Steam Support notes that clearing the cache can resolve games that will not download or start: Clear download cache.
- Open Settings > Storage, select the affected library folder, and use its repair option if available. This is especially relevant if the error suggests a folder or permissions problem.
- Verify the game’s local files where that option is available: in your Library, right-click the game, open Properties > Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Change the download region in Settings > Downloads and test again. Steam says a regional content server may be slow, overloaded, or failing.
If the download repeatedly resets or the game suddenly appears uninstalled, check for existing files before starting over.
If Steam says the game is uninstalled or restarts the download
The game’s files may still be on the computer even when Steam does not recognize the installation. Check the game’s folder and the library location before reinstalling.

- In Settings > Storage, confirm that the library containing the game is listed. Use Storage Manager to add an existing alternate library folder if it is missing.
- Check whether the game folder is still present in the expected location. Starting an installation can let Steam discover and reuse existing files.
- Reinstall only if Steam still cannot recognize the files after checking the folder and library registration.
External drives can disconnect and cause performance or library-recognition problems. If an external drive appears to be the cause, Steam recommends installing Steam and games on an internal drive. Do not delete the Steam library, steamapps, or user data as an early troubleshooting step: Steam warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content.
If the game installs but will not launch
Use the exact error message to choose a fix instead of applying every advanced step at once. For a game stuck at “Preparing to Launch,” Steam recommends a fresh restart, operating-system and relevant driver updates, file verification, checking the game’s requirements, and disabling non-essential software that may interfere. Near-minimum system requirements can still be associated with launch or performance problems.

Check the game’s own Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements. Support varies by title and platform: a game that works on Windows may not support Linux or macOS, and requirements are specific to the game and its version. If the general checks do not solve a game-specific launch failure, contact the developer.
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
A security product may have quarantined or blocked the game executable. Check that product’s quarantine or history and follow Steam’s instructions for the security software. Do not turn off all protection or add a broad exclusion. If no blocked file explains the error, restart the computer and verify the game files. If it persists, submit a Steam Support ticket with the requested screenshot of the error and system report. See Steam’s Missing Executable guidance.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
This message means the game does not support the operating system currently in use. Check the title’s Store-page operating-system and hardware requirements before attempting other launch fixes. Steam directs Store purchasers whose game does not support their operating system to its refund process; purchases made with third-party retail keys are handled differently.
“Game is already running”
A previous crash or hang may have left a game process open. On Windows, open Task Manager and end the game process only if it is actually stuck. On other systems, restart before testing again. Steam also suggests testing outside the client beta if you use it and checking whether the game is running under another operating-system account. When to request a refund
Steam’s published standard refund policy, checked on October 4, 2026, is a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than 2 hours of playtime. Steam says you can still submit a request outside those limits for review; the standard is not a guarantee of eligibility. For a Store purchase, submit through Steam’s refund page. If you bought a third-party retail key, Steam distinguishes that from purchases made in its Store.

When to escalate beyond these steps
- Contact Steam Support for purchase or account access problems, client or library issues, or a persistent missing-executable error after checking security-software history and verifying files.
- Contact the game’s developer for a title-specific launch failure that remains after checking requirements, updates, files, and likely software conflicts.
- Consider qualified PC support if the problem suggests a local drive or memory fault. A different drive can help diagnose an installation problem, but it will not necessarily resolve an account, network, or Steam-client issue.
