If Lydia has died, the simplest way to bring her back is to load a save from before her death. On PC, you can also try the console command resurrect while targeting her corpse, but it is not guaranteed to work with every quest state or mod. The cited command reference covers PC only; on PlayStation and Xbox, an earlier save is the practical recovery option established here.
Can Lydia die permanently?
Yes. Lydia is a Whiterun housecarl and follower, and her character reference lists her as non-respawning. A follower who is knocked down may recover, but Lydia can die if she does not get the chance to recover. Damage from the Dragonborn while she is at low health can also kill her. The Lydia character reference notes that she may rush into combat, putting her in harm’s way.
Being described as “protected” does not mean Lydia is invulnerable. If she is dead, waiting or leaving the area should not be treated as a reliable way to make her respawn.
Ways to bring Lydia back

Reload an earlier save
Load the most recent save made before Lydia died. This is the straightforward recovery route if you want to restore her without console commands. Before trying commands or mods, make a separate backup save so you can return to your current game if the attempt causes problems.

Try the resurrection command on PC
- Make a separate save before experimenting.
- Open the in-game console and select Lydia’s corpse so it is the active target.
- Enter
resurrectand press Enter. - Close the console and check whether Lydia has returned. If she has not, reload your backup save.
The Skyrim console-command reference says these commands are PC-only. It documents resurrect 1 as returning the NPC with current items intact; without the 1, the command removes the corpse and spawns a new copy. Because this is a fan-maintained reference, treat either form as a possible recovery attempt rather than a guaranteed fix, especially in a modded game or a quest-sensitive situation.
On PlayStation or Xbox
The cited command reference limits console commands to PC, and the available sources do not establish a universal built-in resurrection command for PlayStation or Xbox. If Lydia’s death needs to be undone on those platforms, load a save from before it happened if one is available.

What Lydia’s IDs are for—and why they matter
Lydia’s listed Ref ID is 000A2C94; her Base ID is 000A2C8E, according to the Lydia character reference. These identifiers are not interchangeable. The separate setessential command reference says that command takes a base ID and lists Lydia’s Base ID. If you use a command that requires an ID, verify which kind it expects and confirm that you are targeting Lydia before entering it; this is not necessary for the corpse-targeted resurrect attempt described above.
How to reduce the chance of losing her again
- Avoid hitting Lydia when she is down, particularly when her health is low.
- Use care with area attacks when she is fighting nearby.
- Give her a chance to recover before moving into another hazard.
These precautions follow from the documented follower death conditions; they are practical guidance, not a guarantee that Lydia cannot die in combat.
