Check the game’s current activity menus, event calendar, and official update notes first: finishing the main story does not necessarily mean every mode or challenge is done. If another activity sounds enjoyable, try it or set a small personal goal. If the remaining loop feels repetitive or like an obligation, take a break and return only if you want to—there is no universal amount of time you need to keep playing.
First, check what “finished everything” means in your game
Live-service games can combine story missions with rotating activities, events, challenges, competitive modes, or social play, but no single game is guaranteed to offer all of them. Check the current in-game menus and event calendar, then compare them with the game’s official update notes. An activity may be easy to miss, unavailable outside a rotation, or simply not the kind of play you enjoy.

For example, Bungie’s May 21, 2026 Destiny 2 announcement describes variety as a goal for the game, saying activities should suit different play moods. That is a design aim for Destiny 2, not a promise that every live-service game has a mode for every mood.
If you want to keep playing, change the shape of a session
Look for a different activity, difficulty, group size, or session length—but only if your game offers it and it appeals to you. A self-imposed goal can also give a session direction: for instance, focus on one challenge or try a mode you have ignored. Treat these as options, not chores to complete before you are “allowed” to stop.

Bungie’s 2026 Marathon reflection discusses the pressure of a demanding play loop and the value of lower-commitment play alongside challenging runs. Its point is specific to Marathon; it illustrates that a game’s available session formats depend on its design.
If nothing sounds fun, take a break
You do not have to keep logging in just because a game is ongoing, or because a checklist is unfinished. If playing has started to feel repetitive or obligatory, pause and decide later whether you miss it. This is a personal way to manage your time, not a clinical prescription or a claim that there is a universal threshold for taking a break.

If you are waiting for an update, check how firm the plan is
Use official announcements for current dates, and distinguish a confirmed release from work that is merely planned. Live-service schedules can change, so a roadmap is not automatically a guarantee that every item will arrive on a particular day.

In a 2026 Marathon development update, Bungie said it was moving away from a strict seasonal schedule while giving October 6 and December 8, 2026 as planned update dates. Those dates describe Bungie’s plans at the time of the announcement, not a general schedule for other games or a guarantee against later changes.
Roadmap labels matter, too. Electronic Arts’ 2026 Apex Legends roadmap distinguishes “Locked,” “In Progress,” and “Planned” as different stages of certainty and development. Read the explanation attached to a roadmap rather than treating every listed feature as a release commitment.

If you want a different game, choose by the play you want
Rather than looking for another game simply because it has more content, identify what you want from your next sessions. Compare options on these practical points:
- Solo or social: Do you want to play alone, cooperate, or compete with other people?
- Intensity: Are you looking for a demanding competitive loop or a more relaxed experience?
- Session length: Do you want something that fits a short session, or are you happy to commit longer?
- Cost: Check the upfront price or any subscription requirement before switching.
- Time-limited progress: Find out whether events, rewards, or progression depend on playing during a specific window.
These questions help match a game to your available time and mood; they do not imply that any particular title supports every play style.
