Dengue is being reported in the United States, but the risk is not uniform: most cases reported in the 50 states and Washington, DC, have been linked to travel, while frequent or continuous transmission is concentrated in U.S. territories and freely associated states. The latest detailed national analysis covers 2024, not 2026; CDC’s current-year figures are provisional and should be checked directly for updates.
Is dengue spreading in the United States?
Yes, but “outbreak in the U.S.” does not mean dengue is spreading evenly across the continental states. Dengue is transmitted mainly through bites from infected Aedes mosquitoes. Cases reported in the states and Washington, DC, are usually travel-associated; local transmission has occurred sporadically. CDC describes frequent or continuous transmission in Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.
CDC’s detailed report, published May 14, 2026, analyzed 2024 reports from residents of the 50 states and DC. It counted 3,798 cases, compared with an annual average of 828 during 2010–2023 in that same population. Of the 2024 cases, 3,693 (97.2%) were travel-associated and 105 (2.8%) were locally acquired. These historical counts do not describe the current 2026 total. CDC’s 2024 state and DC analysis
What do the latest U.S. numbers show?
The 2024 figures show a substantial increase over the preceding annual average, but they should be read as a snapshot of that year—not as a forecast or a measure of current individual risk.

Among states, Florida reported 1,044 cases, California 720, New York 338, and Texas 241 in 2024. CDC also reports prior local transmission in Florida, Texas, Hawaii, Arizona, and California. These are 2024 findings and historical reports; they do not establish that local transmission is occurring in those places now. CDC MMWR, May 14, 2026
Where can I find the current 2026 case count?
CDC’s 2026 surveillance page is the place to check for the latest available count, alongside updates from the relevant state or territorial health department. CDC labels current-year figures provisional: reporting may be delayed, numbers can change, and surveillance can miss mild illness. Cases are assigned by county of residence, which may not be where exposure occurred, and reporting schedules can differ among public health agencies. CDC current-year dengue data

What are dengue symptoms, and when is it urgent?
Symptoms usually begin within two weeks after a bite from an infected mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, aches and pains—often behind the eyes or in the muscles, joints, or bones—nausea or vomiting, and rash. Illness typically lasts two to seven days, and most people recover after about a week. There are four related dengue virus types, and a person can be infected more than once. CDC: About Dengue

Contact a healthcare professional if you have possible dengue symptoms, especially after travel to an area where dengue occurs. Tell the clinician where and when you traveled. Seek urgent medical assessment for warning signs such as abdominal pain or tenderness, persistent vomiting, fluid accumulation, or bleeding from the nose or gums. Severe dengue can cause shock, breathing difficulty from fluid leakage, severe bleeding, or serious organ involvement.
How is dengue treated?
There is no specific medicine that treats dengue. CDC’s general advice for uncomplicated illness includes rest, fluids, and acetaminophen for fever or pain. Get medical advice about treatment rather than self-medicating: do not use aspirin or ibuprofen for suspected dengue without checking current clinical guidance. Severe dengue requires urgent medical care. CDC: About Dengue

How can you reduce the risk of dengue?
Avoiding mosquito bites is the best way to prevent dengue. Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent according to its label, and take steps to limit bites when mosquitoes are present. CDC’s guidance provides prevention information; no particular product or brand is endorsed here. CDC: Preventing Dengue
What to know about dengue vaccine guidance
CDC’s U.S. guidance recommends dengue vaccine for children ages 9–16 who have laboratory-confirmed evidence of a previous dengue infection and live in areas where dengue is common. CDC says the vaccine is not approved for U.S. travelers who visit those areas but do not live there. Vaccine recommendations are specific to age, prior infection, and residence; consult a healthcare professional or current CDC guidance about eligibility. CDC: About Dengue

Why location and travel history matter
Risk depends on where a person lives or travels and whether transmission is occurring there. In the continental states, the 2024 surveillance report found that nearly all reported cases were associated with travel, while local cases were reported from Florida, California, and Texas. CDC identifies the listed territories and freely associated states as places with frequent or continuous transmission. Check destination-specific public-health information before travel, and share recent travel details with a clinician if symptoms develop.
The authors of the May 2026 CDC MMWR report said the findings “underscore the urgent need for enhanced prevention strategies, clinical awareness, and tailored public health messaging for travelers to areas where dengue is endemic.”
