What to Look for When Buying a Handheld Gaming PC (2026 Guide)

Choosing a handheld gaming PC comes down to your games and operating system, screen, controls, battery and charging, storage, and local price. Here is how to compare them.

The right handheld gaming PC is the one that runs the games and launchers you already use, has a screen and controls you will tolerate for hours, and lasts long enough between charges for how you actually play. No model is the best choice for everyone, so start with your library and habits, then compare the hardware. The specifications below are the manufacturer figures published in early October 2026 for Valve’s Steam Deck OLED and for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally (2025) RC73YA configuration sold in one region. Check your own market before you buy.

The two configurations at a glance

Most buying decisions in this category come down to a few trade-offs between two cited devices. The table lists the values the manufacturers publish. Where a specification page does not give a figure, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Item Steam Deck OLED (Valve specifications) ROG Xbox Ally (2025), RC73YA regional configuration (ASUS specifications)
Operating system SteamOS 3 Windows 11 Home
Processor Not stated in the cited specification AMD Ryzen Z2 A
Display 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280 × 800, up to 90 Hz 7-inch IPS-level touch display, 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz
Brightness 1,000 nits peak HDR; 600 nits SDR 500 nits (no HDR peak stated)
Memory Not stated in the cited specification 16 GB
Internal storage 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD 512 GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD
Expansion UHS-I microSD microSD reader
Battery 50 Wh; Valve estimate of 3–12 hours of gameplay 60 Wh; no gameplay runtime stated
Power adapter Not stated in the cited specification 65 W
Controls listed Two trackpads, four assignable rear grip buttons, capacitive full-size sticks, gyro Full-size sticks, Hall Effect triggers, assignable grip buttons, HD haptics, gyro
Weight Approximately 640 g 670 g
Wireless Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4
USB-C USB-C display output Two USB-C ports with DisplayPort and power delivery

Start with your games and operating system

The operating system decides which storefronts, launchers and anti-cheat systems you can use without workarounds. The Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3. The ROG Xbox Ally configuration above runs Windows 11 Home. That difference matters more than any single spec, because it determines whether your existing library behaves the way you expect.

Specifications do not prove that a game runs on either system. Work through your library with this order:

1. List the games you play most

Write down your ten most-played titles, and note any that you would not want to give up. Include older games, since they often carry the most compatibility history.

2. Check each title’s platform status

Look up each game on the storefront or in its support notes and confirm it is listed for the operating system you are considering. Do not assume a title that runs on one Windows machine will behave the same way on SteamOS.

3. Check launchers and anti-cheat

If you rely on a launcher other than Steam, or on multiplayer games with anti-cheat software, confirm that both work on the operating system you plan to use. Anti-cheat support is set by each game’s publisher and can change, so verify it close to the purchase date.

4. Decide how much setup you will tolerate

SteamOS is designed around a controller-first interface, but it still requires troubleshooting when a non-Steam app or a Windows-only tool is involved. Windows gives broader software compatibility and a familiar desktop, but it also brings driver updates, background processes and the usual Windows setup work. Choose the trade-off you can live with.

  • 8-inch Smoothness Ready: Dive into the ultimate gaming experience with our 8-inch premium 120Hz gaming display, with exceptional color reproduction and smooth action.

Display: size, resolution and brightness

Screen size and resolution work together. A 7-inch panel at 1920 × 1080 packs more pixels into a smaller area than a 7.4-inch panel at 1280 × 800, so text and fine detail look sharper on the ROG Xbox Ally configuration, while the Steam Deck OLED’s OLED panel offers a different contrast and colour character. Neither is objectively better. Look at both at the distance you will hold them.

Refresh rate only helps when a game reaches the frame rate it is capable of. The 90 Hz ceiling on the Steam Deck OLED and the 120 Hz ceiling on the ROG Xbox Ally configuration are maximums, not guarantees. Brightness matters most outdoors and on a bright train. Note that Valve lists HDR peak brightness, while ASUS lists a single 500-nit figure, so the two numbers are not directly comparable. The manufacturer figures describe the hardware, not how the screen looks to you.

Controls and comfort

Specification sheets make most controllers sound identical, so the decision comes down to how the device feels in your hands. Hold each device if you can, and pay attention to the points below:

  • Weight and balance: the difference between roughly 640 g and 670 g is small on paper, but it is noticeable after a long session, and balance across the grip matters as much as total weight.
  • Stick and button placement: check reach to the rear grip buttons and whether your thumbs rest naturally on the sticks.
  • Trigger feel: the ROG Xbox Ally configuration lists Hall Effect triggers. Test whether the travel and resistance suit your shooting or racing games.
  • Trackpads: the Steam Deck OLED lists two trackpads, which many players use for precise mouse-like input. The ASUS specification does not list trackpads, so do not assume they are present.
  • Haptics and gyro: both devices list gyro. The ROG Xbox Ally configuration lists HD haptics; whether you value that feedback is a personal preference.
  • Heat and noise under load: run a demanding game in a store if possible, or ask for a demonstration. Specifications cannot show how fans or the chassis behave over an hour.

Performance and settings

The available sources do not include a controlled head-to-head performance comparison between these two devices, so no performance winner can be named from them. Performance depends on the game, its settings, the resolution and the frame-rate cap you choose, and on how the device’s power profile is configured.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally Gaming Handheld 7" 120Hz, AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB / 512GB
  • [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
  • [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
  • [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
  • [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
  • [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

To judge performance for yourself, follow this method:

  1. Pick the three most demanding games from your list.
  2. Decide the resolution you are willing to play at on a small screen, and whether you will lower visual settings to hit a stable frame rate.
  3. Search for reviews or tests of those exact titles on the same hardware, and note the settings and power profile used in each test.
  4. Compare only results recorded under similar settings. A figure from a different game or a higher-resolution test does not transfer to your use.

Demanding games draw more power, so the same battery will last less time in them. Plan around that, not around a single headline runtime.

Battery life and charging

Battery capacity and runtime are separate measurements, and the two devices are documented differently. Valve lists 50 Wh for the Steam Deck OLED and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay. That runtime figure comes from Valve and depends on the game and settings it was measured with. ASUS lists a 60 Wh battery and a 65 W adapter for the ROG Xbox Ally configuration, but its specification page does not state comparable gameplay runtime. Do not treat the two as tested under the same conditions.

For trips, a USB-C power delivery power bank can help, but it is only useful if it matches the device’s charging requirements. Check three things before buying one:

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  • The bank must offer USB-C power delivery at a wattage the device accepts. The ROG Xbox Ally configuration lists a 65 W adapter. The Steam Deck OLED’s required input wattage is not stated in the cited specification, so confirm it with Valve’s current charger guidance.
  • A higher-wattage bank does not guarantee faster charging on every device, and a bank that cannot supply the required wattage may charge slowly or not at all during play.
  • Battery banks have their own capacity ratings, which you should read as a separate figure from the handheld’s battery.

Storage and expansion

Internal storage determines how many games you can keep installed at once. Valve lists 512 GB and 1 TB NVMe SSD options for the Steam Deck OLED. ASUS lists a 512 GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for the ROG Xbox Ally configuration, with a microSD reader for expansion. Check the exact capacity of the model you are buying, since storage differs by SKU.

A microSD card is a practical way to add space for games you do not play every day. The Steam Deck OLED supports UHS-I microSD expansion, so choose a card that meets that standard. Confirm the card format and speed class before you buy, and do not expect a microSD card to match the speed or capacity of an internal SSD. Keep frequently played games on internal storage where possible.

Connections, wireless and dock use

Both devices list current Wi-Fi and Bluetooth standards, with the Steam Deck OLED on Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.3 and the ROG Xbox Ally configuration on Wi-Fi 6E with Bluetooth 5.4. For most players, the bigger practical question is headphone connectivity and display output. The ROG Xbox Ally configuration lists two USB-C ports with DisplayPort and power delivery. The Steam Deck OLED lists USB-C display output. Ports and bundled chargers can differ by region or SKU, so confirm the exact ports on the model you are considering. If you plan to use a dock or external monitor, check the dock’s compatibility with that model as well.

  • Mostly Steam library, comfortable with a controller-first system: the Steam Deck OLED is the most direct fit, provided your games are listed for SteamOS.
  • Launchers, storefronts or anti-cheat that require Windows: a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally configuration is the more likely match. Confirm the exact configuration and the operating system in the listing.
  • Touch screen and a larger, sharper panel: the ROG Xbox Ally configuration lists a touch display at 1920 × 1080. The Steam Deck OLED specification here does not list touch input.
  • Trackpads and an OLED panel: the Steam Deck OLED lists both.
  • Mostly play near an outlet: battery life becomes less decisive. Focus on the screen, controls and the games you play.
  • Frequent travel or long sessions away from power: weigh the published battery figures and look for runtime tests in the games you play, using the same settings. Plan a power bank only after confirming wattage.
  • Another Windows handheld, such as Lenovo’s Legion Go S: it belongs in the same comparison. Put its exact configuration through the same checklist.

Price, warranty and configuration checks

Compare the total cost of the exact memory and storage configuration you want, not the model name. A cheaper model with less storage can cost more once you add a microSD card, a power bank or a carrying case that you need. Prices change quickly and were not verified for this guide, so check current local listings before you buy.

ASUS states on its official specification page: “All specifications are subject to change without notice. Please check with your supplier for exact offers.” Treat the listed figures as a starting point, and confirm with the seller which configuration, charger and region you are buying.

Check the warranty length, the return window and whether the seller is an authorised retailer for your region. These terms vary by market and can matter more than a small difference in specifications.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Your ten most-played games are confirmed for the operating system you are considering.
  • Any launcher or anti-cheat you depend on works on that operating system.
  • You have held the device, or seen it in use, with your preferred grip and controls.
  • Performance evidence comes from tests of your own games at comparable settings.
  • Battery claims are compared only where the conditions match, and any power bank meets the required charging wattage.
  • The internal storage capacity is confirmed for the exact SKU, and any microSD card matches the device’s format.
  • The total local price, warranty and return policy are confirmed on the seller’s listing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
