Start with Crusader: No Remorse for the closest stated gameplay influence, try Syndicate for real-time tactics, or choose Star Control II for lore and asymmetric systems.

If you want the closest ’90s games to Brigador, start with Crusader: No Remorse and Syndicate. Those are the two games Brigador developer Hugh Monahan identified as its strongest gameplay influences. Try Crusader for isometric aiming and destructible surroundings; choose Syndicate for a more strategy-oriented take on real-time isometric action. Star Control II is a worthwhile detour if Brigador’s lore and mismatched-force systems matter more to you than its vehicle combat.

What should I play after Brigador?

Brigador is a directly controlled, isometric vehicle-combat game. Its original concept was a top-down real-time strategy game, but the design shifted toward controlling one vehicle yourself, according to the developers’ interview with KeenGamer. That distinction helps sort the older games worth trying: some share its action and destruction, while others are closer in atmosphere or tactical thinking.

The developer’s own recommendations point to Crusader: No Remorse as the closest gameplay ancestor, with Syndicate as a strong but more strategy-focused companion. The team’s September 2022 FAQ recommends Star Control II for different reasons: its worldbuilding and balance between ships of unequal strength.

The closest matches

Game Why it fits What feels different
Crusader: No Remorse (1995) Hugh Monahan called it his biggest gameplay influence, pointing to its 3D aiming within an isometric space. The developers also highlight its destructible environments. The developers say its controls can feel awkward by modern standards. Expect older control conventions rather than a modern action-game feel.
Syndicate (1993) The developers identified it as a close influence and an important real-time strategy game. It leans toward strategy and command, whereas Brigador puts you directly in control of one vehicle.
Star Control II (1994) The developers recommend it for lore woven into play and a balance system in which smaller ships can challenge much larger ones. It is a worldbuilding-and-systems detour, not the nearest match for isometric vehicle action.

Choose Crusader for action, aiming, and destruction

Crusader: No Remorse is the clearest first pick if what you want is a direct historical connection. Monahan described it as his biggest influence and singled out the way it handles aiming in an isometric environment. Its destructible surroundings also echo one of Brigador’s defining attractions, though the two games should not be mistaken for identical control experiences.

Choose Syndicate for tactical pressure

Syndicate makes sense if you enjoy the tactical layer around Brigador’s fights. Its real-time strategy lineage is part of why the developers cite it, but the play emphasis differs: Brigador is built around piloting a single vehicle directly rather than issuing broader commands.

Choose Star Control II for lore and asymmetric systems

Star Control II is less a like-for-like action recommendation than a way to follow a different thread in Brigador: a world with lore woven into play and systems that let weaker units contest stronger ones. Pick it if those qualities appeal more than matching the isometric combat.

What makes Brigador distinctive

The official Steam listing describes Brigador: Up-Armored Edition as an isometric roguelite and top-down shooter. Stellar Jockeys lists 56 vehicles, 40 weapons, destructible environments, a 37-mission campaign, and more than 20 freelance maps. Those figures are the publisher’s product specifications, not independent measurements.

That combination explains why no single older recommendation covers every part of the experience. Crusader is the strongest stated link for isometric action and destruction; Syndicate connects through real-time tactics; Star Control II speaks to lore and asymmetric design. Together they offer three different routes into the older games behind the elements players may recognize in Brigador.

Which games were not Brigador influences?

The developers have explicitly said Brigador was not an homage to the Strike series or Future Cop: L.A.P.D., and that they had not played those games during development. In the KeenGamer interview, the team said Desert Strike, MechWarrior 3050, Future Cop: L.A.P.D., and Bedlam were titles people began suggesting as influences after the first trailer, rather than games the team already knew as inspirations. They may look like plausible comparisons, but that is different from a documented lineage.

Availability and compatibility

Stellar Jockeys’ September 2022 FAQ said the recommended classics could then be purchased and played on modern operating systems through DOSBox. That is a statement made at that time, not a guarantee of current storefront availability or smooth operation on every present-day computer. Check the exact title and edition, supported systems, and control setup before buying. The current availability and modern compatibility of each classic are not established by that FAQ.
