Xbox One consoles have full-size USB Type-A ports—not USB-C—and Microsoft specifies all three ports as USB 3.0. Use a USB-A plug at the console end of your cable. The connector shape (USB-A) and the connection standard (USB 3.0) describe different things.
USB-A is the connector; USB 3.0 is the standard
The Xbox One’s console ports are the familiar wide, rectangular USB-A sockets. They are not USB-C, Micro-USB, or Mini-USB. Microsoft’s specifications list three USB 3.0 ports for the original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X (Microsoft’s Xbox One specification sheet).
These labels answer separate questions:
- USB-A describes the physical connector that plugs into the console.
- USB 3.0 describes the interface and its data-transfer capability. USB 3.0 is commonly associated with SuperSpeed and a theoretical signaling rate of up to 5 Gbps; that is not a promise of real-world file-transfer speeds. The device, cable, storage hardware, software, and any hub in the connection can all affect performance.
Microsoft calls the ports USB 3.0 in its Xbox specifications. You may also encounter later naming such as USB 3.1 Gen 1 for the same 5-Gbps-class technology, but USB 3.0 is the label Microsoft uses for these consoles.

Microsoft noted when announcing the Xbox One S that one of its three USB ports had moved to the front, beside the pairing button (Xbox One S announcement). If you are looking for a port on a specific revision, check the console itself or a model-specific image rather than assuming every layout is identical.

The Kinect distinction matters: the original Xbox One has a separate dedicated Kinect connection, while the Xbox One S and Xbox One X need the Kinect Adapter to connect Kinect. Those later consoles do not have the original model’s dedicated Kinect port.
Which cable should you use?
Choose a cable with a USB-A plug for the Xbox end, then match the other end to the accessory:

- Older Xbox One controller: typically USB-A to Micro-USB for a wired connection or accessory use. The controller’s socket is separate from the console port.
- USB-C controller or accessory: use a USB-A-to-USB-C data cable if that device supports a wired connection. Some newer controllers have USB-C; do not assume every controller does.
- External drive: use the drive’s compatible cable with USB-A at the console end.
Check that the cable supports data if the accessory needs data. A charge-only cable may provide power but fail to connect a controller or transfer data. For storage, use the cable supplied with the drive where possible. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable cannot plug directly into an Xbox One console because the console has no USB-C socket.
Microsoft’s controller information describes connectivity for supported controller models; its USB-C references apply to devices that have USB-C, not to the Xbox One console’s ports.

Can you connect USB-C storage or accessories?
Often, a USB-C drive or accessory can connect if its cable or adapter provides a USB-A plug for the console. For example, a USB-C external SSD may be usable with a USB-A-to-USB-C cable, provided the drive and Xbox software support the intended use. A USB-C flash drive may also work through a suitable USB-A adapter.
USB-C by itself does not guarantee compatibility or higher speed. Features such as USB Power Delivery or Thunderbolt are not automatically provided by the Xbox One’s USB-A port. The accessory must also be supported by the console. If a device does not work, changing the connector style alone is unlikely to fix a software, power, cable, or compatibility problem.

External storage and other USB accessories
Xbox One supports compatible external USB storage. For game storage, look for a USB 3.0-or-faster drive that meets Xbox’s storage requirements, and follow the console’s setup or formatting prompts. A USB 3.0 label does not guarantee a particular transfer rate or that every drive is suitable. Power can also matter: if a bus-powered hard drive disconnects or is not detected reliably, try a drive with its own power supply or connect it directly to the console. Microsoft’s USB port use support page covers USB functions and limitations; consult Xbox’s on-console prompts for the requirements that apply to your setup.

Hard drives are generally a lower-cost way to add capacity; SSDs are generally faster and quieter but tend to cost more per gigabyte. Neither changes the Xbox One’s internal hardware limits. A manufacturer’s Xbox storage documentation, such as Seagate’s Xbox drive datasheet, explains USB 3.0 compatibility for its products, but it should not be treated as a complete statement of Microsoft’s requirements for every drive.

Other peripherals are not guaranteed to work just because they have a USB-A plug. Licensed accessories and wired controllers may be supported; keyboard and mouse use depends on Xbox system and game support. Generic USB microphones, headsets, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapters, and other peripherals may not work as intended. Check compatibility for the specific accessory. A headset may instead connect to a controller or require a licensed Xbox-compatible solution.
Using a USB hub or charging from the console
A USB hub can help when the console’s three ports are occupied, but compatibility and power are practical limits. Devices on a hub share its connection, a low-speed hub can constrain storage, and a bus-powered hub may not supply enough power for several demanding devices. For an external game drive—or while diagnosing a problem—connect the drive directly to the Xbox One. Do not assume every accessory will behave properly through every hub.
A console port can supply power to some compatible low-power devices, but that does not make the Xbox One a universal charger. Charging speed and whether charging works depend on the device, cable, battery, and power needs; a wall charger may be more suitable.

If a USB accessory is not recognized
- Disconnect the accessory and restart the console, then reconnect it.
- Try a different USB port on the console.
- Use a known-good USB-A data cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Disconnect other USB devices temporarily to check for a power or hub issue.
- Connect the accessory directly instead of through a hub or extension.
- Confirm that the accessory type and intended use are supported by Xbox.
- For storage, check its power, USB interface, capacity, and the console’s setup or formatting prompts.
- Test the accessory and cable on another compatible device to help isolate the fault.
The console port is USB-A regardless of whether the accessory end is Micro-USB, USB-C, or another connector. If a device fails, investigate the cable, power, setup, and compatibility before looking for a different console connector.
The short answer
Every Xbox One model has three full-size USB-A ports specified as USB 3.0. Use USB-A at the console end, and choose the other end of the cable to match your controller, drive, or accessory.
