What Upload Speed Do You Need for Live Streaming?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single upload-speed number that works for every live stream. Your connection needs to sustain the stream’s encoder bitrate, plus enough spare capacity to handle fluctuations and other devices using the network. As a practical Twitch rule of thumb, allow upload speed equal to your stream bitrate plus 30%: Twitch’s example is at least 8 Mbps upload for a 6 Mbps stream. For YouTube Live, the recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec; those bitrate recommendations are not the same thing as the upload speed to buy.

Upload speed and stream bitrate are different

Stream bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second, usually expressed in megabits per second (Mbps). Upload speed is the connection capacity available for sending data from your location. A speed test may show a high upload result, but that does not guarantee the connection will sustain the same rate continuously while other devices or apps are also uploading.

Use the platform’s recommended encoder bitrate as your starting point, then leave headroom above it. Twitch recommends bitrate plus 30% as a general practice; that is guidance, not a guarantee for every service, network, or multi-stream setup. Other uploads and devices share the available capacity.

YouTube Live H.264 bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates by resolution and frame rate. They are stream settings, not internet-plan upload-speed requirements. Choose the row matching the quality you intend to broadcast, then make sure your connection can sustain that bitrate with additional capacity to spare.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
4K (2160p) at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K (2160p) at 60 fps 35 Mbps

These figures apply to H.264. YouTube publishes different bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265; its guidance gives a 4–10 Mbps range for those codecs at 1080p60. So 12 Mbps is YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p60, not a universal requirement for that resolution and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder guidance for the codec you plan to use.

Estimate a suitable upload target

  1. Pick the platform and output settings. Decide whether you are streaming to Twitch or YouTube Live, and select the resolution and frame rate you can reliably produce.
  2. Set the encoder bitrate for that combination. On YouTube, use the H.264 table above only if your encoder is set to H.264. Do not treat another codec’s recommendation as interchangeable.
  3. Leave room above the bitrate. For Twitch, its general rule is bitrate plus 30%. For other platforms, do not assume that exact margin is a universal guarantee; allow capacity for connection variation and competing traffic.
  4. Measure and test under realistic conditions. Run an upload speed test, then test a broadcast with representative audio and on-screen movement. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
  5. Reduce settings if the stream is unstable. Lower the bitrate first, or reduce resolution or frame rate if needed. A stable stream is preferable to a higher-quality setting that causes dropped frames or interruptions.

Encoder settings that affect a live stream

YouTube Live

  • Protocol: YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframes: Use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Stream health: Test before the broadcast and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while live.

Twitch

  • Ingest bitrate: This is the data rate sent to Twitch and consumes available upload bandwidth.
  • Rate control: Twitch says CBR is preferable where possible.
  • Quality trade-off: Balance video quality against both connection and computer limits; do not push settings so high that frames drop or the connection becomes unreliable.

Can you stream at 1080p60 with your upload speed?

For YouTube Live with H.264, the recommended encoder bitrate for 1080p60 is 12 Mbps. Your connection must sustain more than that in practice, with enough headroom for fluctuations and other network use. If you are using AV1 or H.265, YouTube’s guidance gives a different 4–10 Mbps range for 1080p60. For Twitch, use the bitrate you configure and Twitch’s general bitrate-plus-30% guidance rather than applying YouTube’s number.

A speed-test result alone cannot settle the question: test a representative stream and check platform stream health. If the stream drops frames or becomes unstable, reduce the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until it holds steadily.

Troubleshooting upload-related stream problems

What you notice Likely issue What to try
Dropped frames or interruptions The connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or competing uploads may be using capacity. Lower the bitrate; pause other uploads or reduce their network use; retest with the intended stream settings.
Speed test looks adequate, but the broadcast is unstable A single speed-test result does not establish sustained performance during a live broadcast. Run a test stream with representative audio and movement, monitor platform stream health, and leave more headroom by lowering the bitrate if needed.
Higher settings make the stream worse The chosen quality may be beyond the reliable limits of the connection or computer. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Prefer a stable broadcast over pushing settings to their limits.
YouTube settings do not match the bitrate you expected The recommendation may be for a different codec, resolution, or frame rate. Check the encoder codec and compare against the matching platform recommendation; H.264, AV1 and H.265 guidance differs.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on to keep the stream running. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
