What Was the Dwemer Kingdom Called in The Elder Scrolls?

A UESP lore compilation describes a Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell, but other references portray the Dwemer as clans and city-states. Here is how to read the name and how it differs from Volenfell.

The name most often given for the Dwemer kingdom is Vvardenfell. A UESP lore compilation refers to a “Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell,” but that is a reference-source description, not an established title for one unified Dwemer state. The Dwemer are better understood as a set of clans and city-states, and the name you are looking for belongs to a specific, sourced phrasing.

Where the name Vvardenfell comes from

A UESP lore compilation describes the Nords as failing to subdue the “Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell,” which it says “remained independent and strong.” This is the only source in the material reviewed that uses the kingdom label directly. The full compilation document could not be checked, so the surrounding passage, its original basis, and its exact context are unverified. Treat the wording as a paraphrase attributed to that compilation, not as a verified quotation from an in-game text or a developer.

Why “kingdom” needs a qualifier

Other reference material describes Dwemer political life in different terms. The main points are:

  • Clans: Dwemer society is organized around clans, and clan names recur across the lore.
  • City-states: Individual Dwemer settlements are described as city-states, each with its own identity.
  • Loose alliance: One reference states that several Skyrim city-states formed a loose alliance. That is a looser arrangement than a single crown or empire.

Because the sources describe plural units rather than one realm, the safest wording is “a Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell, as described by the UESP compilation,” not “the Dwemer Empire was officially called Vvardenfell.” The page supporting the alliance description also could not be fetched, so that point rests on a secondary reference.

Volenfell is a different name

Readers often confuse Vvardenfell with Volenfell, which is a separate name tied to a different place and clan. Volenfell is associated with Clan Rourken and is described as a city-state in Hammerfell. A fan reference identifies Volenfell as the Rourken clan’s first city-state. It is not the name given in the Vvardenfell wording.

The timeline supports this separation. An Elder Scrolls Online forum chronology post from 2020 gives the in-game date 1E 420 for Clan Rourken leaving Resdayn to found Volenfell. This is a fictional date from the game’s own calendar, not a real-world statistic, and it is reported in a fan-compiled chronology rather than an official publication.

Comparing the two labels

Term What it names Where it appears in the material Scope Date given
Vvardenfell A Dwemer “kingdom” label used in the phrase “Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell” UESP lore compilation (page content not fully checked) Described as a single kingdom; sources elsewhere describe plural clans and city-states Not stated
Volenfell A Rourken clan city-state in Hammerfell Fan reference (identifies it as Rourken’s first city-state); chronology entry One city-state, not a kingdom 1E 420, Clan Rourken departs Resdayn (Elder Scrolls Online forum chronology post, 2020)

What is and is not established

  • Established by the available sources: the UESP compilation uses the phrase “Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell”; Dwemer political units are described as clans and city-states; Volenfell is a Rourken city-state in Hammerfell.
  • Not established: that Vvardenfell was an official, unified title for all Dwemer; the full context of the UESP passage; a direct in-game or developer statement using the kingdom name.
  • Dated only by a fan source: the 1E 420 date for the Rourken departure.

How to phrase it accurately

If you need to name the kingdom in your own writing, attribute it. For example: “A UESP lore compilation describes a Dwemer kingdom of Vvardenfell, though other references portray the Dwemer as independent clans and city-states.” Avoid presenting Vvardenfell as an official, uncontested state name, and keep Volenfell separate as the name of a Rourken city-state.
