The first PlayStation 4 sold to consumers was Sony’s original CUH-1000A series, part of the CUH-10xx launch family. It went on sale in the United States and Canada on November 15, 2013. The first physical PS4 ever assembled is a different question: Sony has not publicly identified a specific prototype, development unit, or serial number as the first one.
What “first PS4” can mean
The announcement, design reveal, retail launch, and first manufactured unit are separate milestones. Sony announced the PS4 platform in February 2013; the final console design was shown publicly at E3 in June. Consumers first bought it in November. These dates are not interchangeable.
| Milestone | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Platform announcement | February 20, 2013 | Sony introduced the PS4 platform. PlayStation’s announcement recap covered the reveal. |
| Final exterior design revealed | June 2013 | Sony showed the console’s retail design at its E3 presentation. Sony Interactive’s E3 release documents the presentation. |
| First consumer launch | November 15, 2013 | The PS4 launched in the United States and Canada. |
| European and other launches | November 29, 2013 | The console launched in Europe and several other territories; the country-by-country sequence varied. |
| Japanese launch | February 22, 2014 | Japan was not the first market to receive the retail PS4. |
Sony’s 2013 launch announcement names the CUH-1000A series and sets out the November dates for North America and Europe. Its North American launch release confirms the November 15 release.
Which model number was the first retail PS4?
The first retail hardware family was CUH-1000A, also commonly described by the broader regional family CUH-10xx. In the United States, the launch model is commonly identified as CUH-1001A. Other markets used different regional digits, so CUH-1001A is not a universal model number.

- CUH is the PS4 hardware model prefix.
- 10xx identifies the original launch-generation chassis family; the regional digits differ by market.
- A is associated with the original 500GB configuration. Letter and storage details can differ across model families and regions.
These identifiers place a console in a model family, not in a precise factory production order. Sony also made minor changes within the original chassis family, so not every CUH-10xx console is guaranteed to have identical internal parts.
What the original launch PS4 looked like and included
The launch console was finished in Jet Black and had a sharply angled, two-tier chassis with glossy and matte sections. A light bar ran along the upper front edge, with capacitive power and eject controls. The standard launch configuration included a 500GB internal hard drive and a DUALSHOCK 4 controller. HDMI was the video output; it did not carry over the PS3’s broad range of legacy video outputs. Sony’s European PlayStation FAQ identifies the launch color and platform specifications.

- 500GB internal hard drive in the standard original launch configuration.

Launch prices

How to check whether a console is from the launch family
- Find the model label. Check the rear of the console or its original packaging. PlayStation Support’s model and serial number guide shows where to look.
- Read the CUH number. A CUH-10xx model belongs to the original launch chassis family. For a U.S. launch SKU, CUH-1001A is a common identifier; elsewhere, the regional digits may differ.
- Use appearance as a cross-check, not proof. The original angular black chassis with glossy and matte panels is consistent with the launch family, but later CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx revisions look similar.
- Check the box if available. The original packaging can corroborate the model, region, and factory configuration.
A 500GB drive is consistent with the original configuration, but it is not decisive: PS4 drives can be replaced, and a launch-family console may now contain a larger drive. A manufacture date can indicate an early production period, but it does not establish a unit’s place in the production run.
How the launch PS4 differs from later models
| Model family | Common name | Relationship to the first PS4 |
|---|---|---|
| CUH-10xx | Original launch PS4 | First retail hardware family. |
| CUH-11xx / CUH-12xx | Revised original chassis | Later revisions of the original design, not the first launch units. |
| CUH-20xx | PS4 Slim | Smaller redesign, introduced in September 2016. |
| CUH-70xx | PS4 Pro | Higher-performance variant, introduced in November 2016. |
This is a general family guide, not a complete SKU list; regional suffixes and storage configurations vary. The Slim and Pro are later products, not versions of the first retail PS4. The PS4 technical-specifications reference summarizes the later model families.

Was the very first PS4 a prototype or development kit?
Pre-release development hardware existed before retail consoles, but it should not automatically be described as “the first PS4.” Sony’s 2013 FAQ says conceptual PS4 development began in 2008, years before the consumer launch. That establishes an early development period, not the identity of the first physical unit. Sony has not publicly identified the first prototype, first development kit, first factory-produced console, or a serial number that proves any of those distinctions. Sony’s North American FAQ discusses the development timeline.
Development systems are not necessarily retail-equivalent: they may have different enclosures, debugging hardware, or unfinished software. A photograph, collector listing, or early manufacture date alone does not verify that a unit was the first one built.

- Compatible with Sony PS4 CUH-1004 CUH-1116 CUH-1216, this kit is used to securely install a SATA hard drive inside the host. The bracket design fits the original structure to ensure a secure installation.
- The accompanying shock-absorbing adhesive can effectively reduce the mechanical vibration generated by the hard drive during operation, making the hard drive run more stably, while reducing resonance noise and extending the service life of the hard drive.
- Each set of five fixed screws can be used to lock the hard drive and the bracket, ensuring that the bracket is structurally stable after being pushed back into the hard drive compartment, and will not loosen due to moving the host or long-term use.
- The installation method is simple: slide the side cover of the host to see the hard drive compartment, fix the hard drive in the bracket with screws and push it into place, then install the shock absorber to complete the installation.
- The kit adopts a size design compatible with the original structure, which can directly replace damaged or lost bracket components. There are a total of 4 sets. Includes 20x screws and 16x rubber washers.
What the model number can—and cannot—prove
- It can identify the hardware family. CUH-10xx is the practical marker for the original retail chassis family.
- It cannot prove an individual console was first off the line. Sony’s public support information explains where to find a serial number, but does not provide a public chronological ranking of units.
- It does not guarantee original parts. A hard drive can be replaced, and minor revisions may exist within a family.
- It does not make a console rare by itself. Launch-family status is historical identification, not evidence of scarcity.
