What Was the First Video Game to Have an Easter Egg?

Adventure is the conventional answer, but earlier software and game secrets mean it is safer to call Warren Robinett’s hidden Atari 2600 signature the famous early example—not the definitive first secret ever.

Adventure for the Atari 2600 is the game usually credited with the first video-game Easter egg. Its designer, Warren Robinett, hid a room that displayed his name. But calling it the first depends on what counts: earlier secrets appeared in games and other software, so Adventure is best described as the famous early example—not an uncontested first secret of any kind.

What was hidden in Adventure?

Robinett concealed a room containing the message “Created by Warren Robinett.” Players had to locate a nearly invisible gray pixel, use the bridge to reach it, and carry it to a particular wall to reveal the room. The Atari 2600 game’s design constraints were substantial: the Game Developers Conference’s 2015 postmortem describes 30 rooms, 18 objects, and a 4K-byte ROM limit (Game Developers Conference).

Robinett did not describe it as an Easter egg. “I didn’t call it an ‘Easter egg.’ I called it my ‘signature,’” he said in an interview with Don’t Die. The signature was his way of claiming authorship because his name was not credited on the game’s box. He kept it secret until the game had been reproduced and distributed; Atari learned of it after a player discovered it (Don’t Die; Atari Archive).

Why the answer depends on what “first” means

Adventure is the conventional answer because Robinett’s hidden credit became the celebrated example associated with video-game Easter eggs. The Game Developers Conference calls it one of the earliest known Easter eggs; the Atari Archive characterizes it as the first commercial game with an undocumented secret discovered around release. Those are narrower claims than “the first secret in any game or software.”

Earlier examples complicate an absolute claim. The Atari Compendium records “HI RON!” in Starship 1, released in July 1977, as well as programmer initials in the 1978 arcade games Orbit and Skydiver. It also describes hidden credits in Fairchild Channel F material, including a demonstration cartridge produced in September 1977. For an earlier secret that was not a developer credit, it points to Moonlander, a DEC GT40 computer game released in February 1973, which includes a McDonald’s scene in its lunar landscape. The Atari Archive likewise notes earlier software secrets, including Moonlander and the text editor TECO.

These examples do not settle a single all-category winner. The answer changes with the definition: an earlier known secret in any software, a hidden developer credit, a secret in a commercial game, or the first widely recognized example later associated with the Easter-egg tradition. Prototype or demonstration material, platform, whether players could trigger the secret on original hardware, and when it was discovered also affect comparisons.

How to state the claim accurately

  • For the standard short answer: Adventure for the Atari 2600 is usually credited with the first video-game Easter egg.
  • For the precise historical claim: It is a famous early example and an early hidden developer credit in a commercial game, but earlier game and software secrets are documented.
  • For Robinett’s role: He created the hidden signature; do not say he coined the term “Easter egg.” The Atari Compendium credits Atari manager Steve Wright with applying that label to hidden game surprises.
