The Radeon HD 3850 AGP is the best-supported answer for the most powerful widely available retail AGP graphics card. It led period testing against earlier AGP flagships and generally outperformed its closest late-generation rival, the Radeon HD 4670 AGP. The 4670 could win particular games or frame-rate tests, while rare specialty cards make an unqualified claim about every AGP card ever manufactured hard to prove.
What does “most powerful” mean?
There is no single winner for every game, benchmark, or definition of “ever made.” A useful overall ranking prioritizes results across multiple games and resolutions, documented retail products, and repeatable comparisons—not one exceptional benchmark, an unusually high overclock, or a rare regional model. On that basis, the HD 3850 AGP is the strongest mainstream answer.
- Fastest overall among widely available retail cards: Radeon HD 3850 AGP.
- Closest late-generation rival: Radeon HD 4670 AGP, which can win selected workloads.
- Strong conventional Nvidia contender: GeForce 7950 GT AGP, though it generally trails the HD 3850 in broader comparisons.
- Rare or specialty exceptions: unusual Gainward GeForce 7800 GS “Bliss” variants and other model-specific cards whose availability and specifications varied.
This is an overall gaming-performance judgment, not a claim that the HD 3850 wins every game, synthetic benchmark, or overclocking contest.

A late-generation GPU with strong memory bandwidth
The HD 3850 uses AMD’s RV670 GPU. In the comparison published by Overclockers.ru, it has a 256-bit memory interface, compared with the HD 4670’s 128-bit interface. That wider interface helps explain why the HD 3850 tends to pull ahead in bandwidth-heavy and higher-resolution tests, despite the HD 4670’s newer, more efficient design.

Period testing showed a large lead over the X1950 Pro
In a PC Games Hardware test using an Opteron 185 system, the HD 3850 AGP averaged about 28 frames per second in Crysis at 1,024 × 768 with high details, versus 15 FPS for the Radeon X1950 Pro AGP—about an 87% lead in that test. It led by about 65% in Unreal Tournament 3 in the same review. The review also reported roughly fivefold performance over GeForce 7800 GS and 6800 Ultra cards in its test suite; that ratio describes those tests, not every game or system.
Tom’s Hardware likewise called the HD 3850 the fastest AGP card it had tested. Its discussion of the HD 4670 AGP’s likely performance was an estimate, however: the review did not yet have completed direct testing of that card. Tom’s Hardware’s account is useful period context, but the estimate should not be treated as a measured head-to-head result.
AGP did not erase most of its advantage
In PC Games Hardware’s test system, the PCI Express version was about 4% faster than the AGP HD 3850 in 3DMark06, while gaming differences were generally modest. That suggests the AGP interface itself was not the main limitation in those tests. The rest of the computer still matters: a slow processor can become the bottleneck before the GPU is fully used.

Radeon HD 3850 AGP vs. Radeon HD 4670 AGP
The HD 4670 is not simply a slower card: comparative results are mixed by game and test conditions. In the retrospective comparison from Overclockers.ru, the HD 3850 generally led synthetic benchmarks and many shader-heavy or higher-resolution tests. The HD 4670 came close in CPU-limited cases and won selected game tests; it also produced the highest minimum FPS in at least one Crysis comparison. A separate Level1Techs retrospective also treats them as close contenders rather than establishing a universal winner.
| Category | Radeon HD 3850 AGP | Radeon HD 4670 AGP |
|---|---|---|
| Overall standing | Best-supported aggregate-performance candidate | Closest rival; can win selected tests |
| GPU | RV670 | RV730 |
| Memory interface | 256-bit | 128-bit |
| Common memory capacity | 512 MB | 512 MB or 1 GB variants |
| Efficiency | Higher power and cooling demands | More efficient design; potentially preferable where power or heat matters |
| Best fit | Maximum broadly supported AGP gaming performance | Lower-power build or workload that favors its results |
More VRAM does not automatically make a card faster. A 1 GB HD 4670 can help when a game needs more usable memory than a 512 MB card provides, but capacity does not replace GPU performance or the HD 3850’s wider memory interface. The Overclockers.ru comparison found that a 1 GB HD 4670 did not automatically beat a 512 MB HD 3850.
Other serious AGP contenders
Radeon X1950 XT AGP
The X1950 XT was a powerful DirectX 9-era card and could outperform the GeForce 7950 GT AGP in several games. It remains formidable in some older titles, but its older feature set and less consistent results in newer shader-heavy games leave it behind the HD 3850 overall in the comparative testing. It was also less common than the X1950 Pro. The cited comparison provides the head-to-head context.

GeForce 7950 GT AGP
The 7950 GT was among Nvidia’s strongest conventional AGP offerings and can be a compelling choice for older DirectX 9 or OpenGL games. It generally falls behind the HD 3850 in broader late-generation comparisons. The Overclockers.ru comparison covers it alongside the ATI/AMD contenders.

Gainward GeForce 7800 GS “Bliss” variants
Some Gainward “Bliss” 7800 GS models are discussed by enthusiasts as unusually powerful, with configurations associated with 7900 GT-class hardware. Their revisions, specifications, regional availability, and documentation are inconsistent, so they are best treated as notable specialty exceptions—not a dependable overall retail winner. See the historical discussions at AnandTech and another AnandTech thread.
Radeon X1950 Pro AGP
The X1950 Pro was a major late-AGP upgrade and can suit a system that cannot comfortably run a more demanding card. It is not the overall performance leader: in the PC Games Hardware tests, the HD 3850 led it substantially in Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3.

Why no card wins every game
These comparisons span different processors, resolutions, game engines, APIs, drivers, memory configurations, and card revisions. At lower resolutions, a CPU limit can compress the gap between cards; at higher resolutions or in shader-heavy games, GPU and memory bandwidth differences can matter more. Minimum FPS, average FPS, and synthetic benchmark scores also answer different questions. The available comparisons establish a strong overall case for the HD 3850, not a universal per-game sweep.
The HD 3850 was sold as an AGP 8x product by multiple board partners, including Sapphire, PowerColor, Club 3D, and GeCube. It was a dedicated AGP board design, not an ordinary PCI Express card attached through a passive adapter; AGP implementations used bridge-chip technology. This distinction matters when identifying a genuine board, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every AGP motherboard.
What to check before putting one in a retro PC
The fastest historical card is not automatically the best choice for a particular machine. AGP systems vary in slot voltage and keying, BIOS behavior, chipset support, and power delivery. Confirm the board’s requirements against the motherboard documentation and the exact card revision rather than assuming that physical fit or an “AGP 8x” label is enough.
- Motherboard and BIOS: Verify the motherboard supports the card’s AGP signaling and check whether a relevant BIOS update is available.
- Power supply: Check the card’s auxiliary-power connector and the PSU’s actual capacity and available current. An adapter cannot make an inadequate PSU safe.
- CPU: A weak single-core Pentium 4 or Athlon XP may bottleneck the card, limiting the benefit of the upgrade.
- Cooling and condition: Inspect the fan, heatsink, capacitors, and board for wear. A card that displays an image may still overheat or fail under 3D load.
- Operating system and drivers: Confirm that suitable legacy Catalyst drivers exist for the intended OS. Driver availability and behavior differ between Windows XP and later systems; do not assume the card is a good Windows 98-era match.
- Target games: For a DirectX 9-focused or lower-power build, an X1950 XT or HD 4670 may be a more sensible match than pursuing maximum aggregate performance.
A current, universal motherboard compatibility list is not established by the cited comparisons, so compatibility must be checked model by model.
Broad overall ranking
- Radeon HD 3850 AGP: best-supported winner for overall mainstream AGP performance.
- Radeon HD 4670 AGP: closest rival and efficiency alternative; wins selected workloads.
- Radeon X1950 XT AGP: powerful DirectX 9 specialist.
- GeForce 7950 GT AGP: strong conventional Nvidia contender, especially for some older workloads.
- Gainward 7800 GS/Bliss variants: rare, model-specific exceptions that resist a single general ranking.
- Radeon X1950 Pro AGP: an important late-AGP card, but clearly below the HD 3850 in the cited direct tests.
This ordering summarizes broad performance evidence, not every game or an individual card’s condition. For a system being built today, compatibility, power, cooling, drivers, and the actual state of the used board can matter more than the historical ranking.
