For a typical Xbox 360 setup, you need a power supply brick and its AC wall cord, one compatible video-and-audio connection, and batteries or a battery pack for a wireless controller. If your console and TV both have HDMI, a standard HDMI cable is usually the simplest display connection. HDMI does not power the console, and the correct power brick depends on the Xbox 360 model.
Start with the console and TV ports
Before buying a cable, check the labels and connectors on the back of both devices. Xbox 360 accessories are not all interchangeable, and listings that say only “Xbox 360 cable” may not identify the console revision they fit.
- Identify whether your console is the original Xbox 360, Xbox 360 S, or Xbox 360 E.
- Check whether the console has an HDMI port. Some original Xbox 360 revisions do not; do not assume yours has one.
- Look at the TV or monitor’s inputs: HDMI, yellow/red/white composite, green/blue/red component, VGA, or DVI.
- Check whether the display has speakers or whether you need a separate audio connection.
- Check the power-brick label and console model information before buying a replacement.
Photograph the console’s rear ports and the label on any existing power supply. Those details are more useful than a vague “fits Xbox 360” listing.
The essential wires and accessories

The power brick and AC cord are separate from the TV connection. An HDMI cable carries digital video and audio, but it cannot power the Xbox. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 S manual describes controller AA batteries and the Play & Charge Kit as power options, and advises matching the power supply to the console.

HDMI: the simplest option when available
If both the Xbox and TV have HDMI, use an ordinary, working HDMI cable. There is no need to buy one merely because it is branded for Xbox 360. A standard cable carries picture and sound between the devices. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HDMI accessory manual covers HDMI display connections and separate audio options when using an audio adapter.
Composite: for yellow/red/white inputs
Composite uses one yellow plug for video and white/red plugs for left and right audio. It is a standard-definition connection, often useful with older TVs. Select the TV input labeled AV, composite, AUX, or similar. If the cable has a TV/HDTV switch, follow the cable’s instructions for the display you are using.
Component: for green/blue/red video inputs
Component carries video over three plugs: green Y, blue Pb/Cb, and red Pr/Cr. Audio uses separate white and red plugs. Connect every plug to the same component input group and select that input on the TV. The red video plug and red right-audio plug are easy to mix up, so follow the port labels, not color alone. Microsoft’s component cable instructions show the connector mapping and input selection.

VGA: for compatible monitors and projectors
An Xbox 360 VGA HD AV cable connects the console’s AV port to a VGA display. You must also connect its audio leads to powered speakers, a receiver, or a monitor’s audio input; VGA does not carry sound. Check that the monitor accepts the Xbox’s output resolution. Microsoft’s VGA cable manual explains the separate audio connection and display-reset procedure.
Identify your Xbox 360 before ordering a power supply
Original Xbox 360, Xbox 360 S, and Xbox 360 E consoles have different physical designs and power connections. The original model is larger and curved; the S is slimmer; the E has a later, more angular design. HDMI availability and AV arrangements also vary, particularly across original-console revisions.
Do not choose a power brick based only on the words “Xbox 360.” Read the model information on the console and compare it with the model number and electrical rating on the brick. Match the connector, console revision, and regional electrical requirements. Microsoft’s important information manual warns users to use the appropriate power supply and AC cord; the Xbox 360 S manual gives model-matching guidance. Do not substitute a power supply for an Xbox One, Xbox Series console, laptop, or other device. Stop using a damaged or overheating brick or cord.

Does an Xbox 360 come with an HDMI cable?
It depends on the console package, market, and what a current seller includes. Xbox 360 packages varied, and some included analog AV equipment rather than HDMI. The console may have an HDMI port even if no HDMI cable is included; some early original consoles lack the port altogether. Since most purchases now are used, check the listing’s exact contents or ask the seller for photos of the ports and included cables rather than relying on the original package name.

If your console and TV have standard HDMI ports, a conventional HDMI cable is sufficient for the connection. It does not need special Xbox branding.
Connect the Xbox 360 to a TV
HDMI setup
- Turn off the console and TV.
- Connect HDMI from the Xbox’s HDMI port to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Connect the correct power brick to the console, connect its AC cord to the brick, and plug it into a suitable wall outlet.
- Put batteries in the controller or attach a charged battery pack.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input you used, then turn on the Xbox.
Composite setup
- With the console off, connect the AV cable’s console end to the Xbox AV port.
- Connect yellow to composite video and white/red to left/right audio.
- Select the TV’s matching composite or AV input.
- Turn on the TV and console. If the cable has a TV/HDTV switch, use the setting specified for your display.
Component setup
- With the console off, connect the AV cable’s console end to the Xbox AV port.
- Connect green to Y, blue to Pb/Cb, and the red video plug to Pr/Cr.
- Connect white and the other red plug to left and right audio, checking the TV’s labels so the plugs stay in the same input group.
- Select the TV’s component input, then turn on the console.
VGA setup
- Connect the VGA HD AV cable’s console end to the Xbox AV port and its VGA end to the monitor.
- Connect the cable’s audio leads to powered speakers, a receiver, or the monitor’s audio input.
- Select VGA on the monitor and turn on the console.
- If the monitor reports an unsupported mode, reset the Xbox display settings using the procedure below.
Connecting to modern TVs and computer monitors
Modern TV: Use HDMI if the Xbox has an HDMI port. If it does not and the TV has no compatible analog input, you need an active converter that accepts the Xbox’s analog video and outputs HDMI. A product described as a simple “RCA-to-HDMI cable” may be passive and unable to convert the signal. Confirm the converter’s input type and audio handling before buying. Conversion can affect image quality, introduce latency, or fail with a particular display; it is an extra device, not a special Xbox cable.

Computer monitor: HDMI is straightforward if both devices have HDMI and the monitor handles HDMI audio or you have another audio route. For VGA, use the Xbox 360 VGA HD AV cable and connect audio separately. For DVI, an HDMI-to-DVI adapter can carry the image, but you will usually need separate audio. A monitor without speakers will need powered speakers, headphones connected through an appropriate audio output, or a receiver.
Some TVs have a green component jack that can also accept composite video, but this varies by model. Check the TV’s manual or port labels instead of assuming the green input doubles as yellow composite.
Optional Xbox 360 wires and accessories
- Ethernet cable: Needed only for a wired network connection. It is not required for offline play, startup, controller use, or video.
- Controller power: A wireless controller needs AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack. A Play & Charge cable is intended to charge the rechargeable pack; do not assume it makes a wireless controller operate as a fully wired controller. A wired Xbox 360 controller is a separate controller designed to connect by cable.
- Optical audio: Optional if your audio equipment supports digital optical audio and your console/cable arrangement provides a compatible optical output. The optical cable carries audio, not video; it may be separate from the AV cable.
- Kinect: Optional for games and features that use the Kinect sensor. It is not needed for ordinary controller-based play, and requirements can depend on console revision and sensor setup.
- USB accessories or storage: Optional and dependent on what accessory or storage function you intend to use; they are not part of the basic power-and-TV wiring.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No power
- Check that the wall outlet works and that the AC cord is seated in both the outlet and power brick.
- Confirm the brick’s console connector is fully seated and that the brick is the correct model and regional electrical specification.
- Do not use a frayed cord, damaged brick, or a supply that becomes unusually hot. Keep ventilation openings clear.
No picture or “no signal”
- Turn off the console and display, then reseat the video cable.
- Confirm the TV is set to the input you actually used.
- Try another HDMI input or known-working cable; remove adapters, splitters, or receivers temporarily to simplify the path.
- Try the console on another compatible display if available. Do not conclude the console has failed until cable and display issues are ruled out.
- For VGA, if the display cannot handle the saved resolution, reset display settings: remove any disc, turn off the console, hold the Xbox Guide button on player one’s controller while turning it back on, then during startup hold Y while pulling the right trigger. This returns display settings to default.
Picture but no sound
- Check that the TV, receiver, or speakers are not muted and that the selected input is correct.
- For component or composite, ensure the white and red audio plugs are connected to the matching input group.
- For VGA, connect a separate audio cable; VGA provides no audio.
- If using a converter, test the console directly on a compatible display if possible, and check whether the converter passes audio.
- If using optical audio or a receiver, review the Xbox dashboard audio settings and confirm the receiver’s selected input.
Controller will not work
Check or replace its batteries, or charge/replace its battery pack. A Play & Charge cable is not the same thing as a dedicated wired controller.

Console shuts down or the power supply gets hot
Stop using a damaged or unusually hot power supply, and make sure its ventilation is unobstructed. Verify that the supply is the correct one for the console and local power. Do not improvise with another device’s adapter.
Before you buy: a quick checklist
- Console revision: original Xbox 360, S, or E.
- Photo of the console’s rear ports, including whether HDMI is present.
- Photo of the power brick label and its model/electrical rating, if you have one.
- TV or monitor input types and whether it has speakers.
- Audio plan for VGA, DVI, or a converter setup.
- Correct regional AC cord and a replacement power supply verified for the exact console.
- For a used AV cable, confirmation of its console connector and whether it is composite, component, or VGA.
The original Xbox 360 accessory range included multiple AV types and package variations; Microsoft’s launch announcement is historical evidence of that variety, not a guide to current stock. Xbox 360 accessories are often sold used or by third parties, so verify the connector and condition rather than assuming a current official replacement is available.
