Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy one participating digital game and play it on supported Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs, and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds without an additional Play Anywhere charge. The game must carry the Play Anywhere badge, and you must use the account associated with the purchase. It does not turn a disc into a cross-platform license or let you play the same game on multiple devices at once.
How Xbox Play Anywhere works
Play Anywhere is a title-specific digital game entitlement, not a separate plan. When you own a participating game digitally, Xbox says you can install and play it on supported platforms without paying an extra Play Anywhere fee. The game’s saves, eligible add-ons and achievements carry over when you switch devices, provided you sign in with the account associated with the game.
Xbox’s current Xbox Play Anywhere page describes support for Xbox console, Windows 10/11 PC and supported gaming handhelds. That wording is more current than the launch-era platform description in Xbox Wire’s September 15, 2016 explainer, which referred to Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.
Which games qualify?
Not every Xbox game participates. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the game’s Xbox Store or Windows Store listing, or check Xbox’s participating-games list on its official feature page. Check the individual title before buying; Xbox’s participation list and compatibility details can change.

What carries between devices?
For a game you own that participates, Xbox says game progress and achievements carry across supported devices. Eligible game content carries over too, including add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks. This is about content for the Play Anywhere game you own; it is not a general promise that purchases or progress transfer between unrelated games.
What Play Anywhere does not include
Physical discs do not qualify
Play Anywhere applies to digital games. A physical Xbox disc does not grant the cross-platform digital entitlement. Xbox says a digital code from a participating retailer is an eligible purchase route, but confirm the game itself has the Play Anywhere badge.

It does not support simultaneous play on multiple devices
You cannot be signed into the same game at the same time on an Xbox console, PC and/or supported handheld. Play Anywhere supports moving between devices, not using one owned copy to play that game simultaneously on multiple devices.
It is not a universal subscription or streaming benefit
The feature page describes the entitlement for a digital game you own. It does not establish that every game in a subscription catalogue is included, that a subscription is universally required, or that Play Anywhere itself is a cloud-streaming service. Check the current terms for a specific subscription title or streaming option separately.

It does not guarantee support on every handheld
Xbox specifies supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds. Its feature page does not name particular models, so do not assume that any portable gaming device qualifies; verify compatibility for the device and game.

How to check and install a Play Anywhere game
- Before buying: Open the game’s Xbox Store or Windows Store listing and confirm it has the Play Anywhere badge.
- Choose a digital purchase: Buy the game digitally or use a participating retailer’s digital code. A disc purchase is not eligible.
- Use the right account: Sign in on each device with the Xbox Live/Microsoft account associated with the game.
- Install it on Xbox: On console, find the game under My Games & Apps > Ready to Install.
- Install it on Windows PC: Find it in My Library in the Xbox app or Windows Store, as applicable.
- Check requirements: Xbox lists Windows 10/11 PC support and requires Windows 10 Anniversary Edition update or later for PC; the console should have the latest update installed.
- For a handheld: Verify it is a supported Windows 11 gaming handheld before relying on Play Anywhere.
