Yes—PS VR2 can work on a Windows PC without a PS5, but you need Sony’s PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, a separate DisplayPort 1.4 cable, direct USB 3.0 and DisplayPort connections, Bluetooth for the Sense controllers, and three free Steam downloads. As of August 16, 2026, Sony’s supported setup is wired and does not preserve every PS5 feature.
Quick checklist
- PlayStation VR2 headset and both PS VR2 Sense controllers
- Official PlayStation VR2 PC adapter
- DisplayPort 1.4-compatible cable, sold separately
- 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
- Direct USB 3.0 connection to the adapter
- Dedicated DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output from the PC
- Bluetooth 4.0 or later for the controllers
- Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App
- Steam account and an internet connection
Sony’s PC requirements do not list a PS5 as necessary. The supported connection uses the adapter between the PC and headset; the PS5 feature set is not reproduced in full. See Sony’s requirements at PlayStation VR2 PC preparation.
Minimum PC requirements
| Part | Sony minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100; AMD must use Zen 2 or newer |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM or more |
| Nvidia graphics | GeForce GTX 1650 or newer; Nvidia RTX requirement specifies Turing or later |
| AMD graphics | Radeon RX 5500 XT or newer, or RX 6500 XT or newer |
| Video output | Dedicated standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output, using DisplayPort 1.4 |
| USB | USB 3.0 |
| Wireless | Bluetooth 4.0 or later |
| Storage | 700 MB available for the PlayStation VR2 App |
Sony recommends an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 or later or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT or later for better performance. A minimum-specification PC may run the headset but does not guarantee smooth frame rates, high render resolution or good performance in demanding games. Requirements and recommendations are listed by Sony at its PC support page and on the PlayStation VR2 App Steam page.
Laptop warning
A laptop can meet the processor and graphics numbers and still fail. Check that its dedicated GPU actually drives a physical DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output. Sony specifically does not support DisplayPort over USB-C for this adapter. HDMI conversion is not a supported substitute. A laptop’s USB-C port, integrated-graphics routing, or shared graphics switch can therefore make an otherwise powerful machine incompatible.

What you must buy
Required hardware
- PS VR2 system: the headset and both Sense controllers.
- PlayStation VR2 PC adapter: the required bridge for Sony’s supported PC connection. Sony’s Direct listing is here.
- DisplayPort 1.4 cable: not supplied as part of the PC adapter setup. Connect it directly from the PC’s dedicated DisplayPort output to the adapter.
The adapter uses its supplied AC adapter and power cord as well as USB and DisplayPort. The adapter’s historical US launch estimate was $59.99 in 2024; that is not a verified August 2026 retail price. See Sony’s announcement at PlayStation Blog.
Only buy these when needed
- External Bluetooth adapter: needed if the PC has no Bluetooth or its built-in radio gives unreliable pairing or tracking.
- Short USB 2.0 extension: useful for positioning an external Bluetooth adapter away from the PC case and USB 3.0 interference. It must not be used for the PS VR2 PC adapter’s own USB connection.
Sony lists TP-Link UB500, ASUS USB-BT500, Buffalo BSBT5D205BK and IO-DATA USB-BT50LE as tested on July 20, 2024, but says operation is not guaranteed for every system. Details: Sony’s Bluetooth compatibility page.
Free software
- Steam, including a Steam account
- SteamVR, the runtime for PC VR
- PlayStation VR2 App, for setup, room boundaries, settings and firmware
You need internet access to reach Steam and these applications. Leave the PlayStation VR2 App installed after setup even though Sony says you do not have to open it manually for every SteamVR session.
Connect the hardware in this order
- Update the PC’s graphics driver. If the newest driver causes trouble, Sony says trying a previous version may help.
- Charge both Sense controllers and install Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App.
- Connect the PC adapter directly to a PC USB 3.0 Type-A port. Do not use a hub or extension.
- Connect a DisplayPort 1.4 cable directly from the PC’s dedicated graphics output to the adapter.
- Connect the supplied AC adapter and power cord to the PC adapter and a wall outlet.
- Connect the headset cable to the adapter’s USB-C headset port.
- Press the headset power button and wait for the adapter and headset indicators to turn white.
- Open the PlayStation VR2 App and complete its on-screen setup.

Pair both Sense controllers
Pair each controller separately in Windows Bluetooth settings, with its USB cable disconnected.
- For the left controller, hold PS + Create until the status light blinks.
- In Windows, open Bluetooth settings, choose Add device, and select the left controller.
- For the right controller, hold PS + Options until its light blinks, then add it in Windows.
- If a light stops blinking before detection, repeat the button combination.
Complete room setup
The PlayStation VR2 App guides you through headphones, headset adjustment, lens adjustment, room scanning, floor height and play-area boundaries. Clear furniture from the safe space, improve lighting and close curtains to prevent direct sunlight from interfering with tracking. You can edit the play area later in the app or from the SteamVR dashboard.
Start a SteamVR game
- Launch SteamVR.
- Put on the headset and press the PS button on a Sense controller to open the SteamVR dashboard.
- Launch a compatible SteamVR title. L2 or R2 can select items in the SteamVR interface.
- If a game’s controls are wrong, check that game’s SteamVR controller bindings.
Hardware compatibility does not mean every SteamVR game has perfect Sense-controller mappings or acceptable performance.

- Install the latest driver from the Bluetooth adapter manufacturer.
- Put an external adapter in a USB 2.0 port, away from USB 3.0 ports and the computer chassis.
- Use a short USB 2.0 extension to improve line of sight.
- Disable the built-in Bluetooth adapter when switching to an external one.
- Turn off unnecessary Bluetooth devices, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi where possible, and remove obstructions.
- Turn off a nearby PS5 if the controllers were previously paired with it.
- If problems persist, remove hidden or unused Bluetooth and PS VR2 controller entries in Device Manager, restart Windows and reinstall the current driver.
Bluetooth 4.0 or later is only Sony’s baseline; it is not a guarantee of compatibility.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No headset image
- Verify a DisplayPort 1.4 cable and a direct connection to the dedicated GPU output.
- Confirm the adapter has AC power and direct USB 3.0, not a hub.
- Reseat the headset cable, restart the headset and PC, and check the PlayStation VR2 App.
- In SteamVR, enable Direct Mode; try another direct USB port; update or roll back the graphics driver if needed.
Adapter not detected
Try another direct USB port, power-cycle the PC and headset, inspect the adapter indicator, update graphics and Bluetooth drivers, and check device status in the PlayStation VR2 App.
Controllers connect but tracking is poor
Separate Bluetooth connection faults from headset camera tracking. Check adapter placement, USB 3.0 interference, battery level, nearby Bluetooth devices, a powered-on PS5, lighting, direct sunlight and physical obstructions.
SteamVR works but a game does not
Check that title’s controller bindings, lower Render Resolution, disable Motion Smoothing, restart SteamVR after firmware updates, and inspect device status from the PlayStation VR2 App.

Firmware update fails
- Open the PlayStation VR2 App.
- Select Update beside the device.
- Wait until the status reads Up to date.
- Restart SteamVR.
Who should buy the adapter?
The official adapter is a strong fit if you already own PS VR2, have a desktop or laptop with a dedicated supported DisplayPort output, and want Sony’s supported SteamVR route. It is a poor fit for HDMI-only or USB-C-only video systems, PCs below the minimum specification, users expecting the full PS5 feature set, or anyone seeking a wireless setup. Unofficial adapters and driver replacements are not equivalent to Sony’s supported path and may introduce compatibility problems.
