No Man’s Sky Worlds Part I is Update 5.0, released in July 2024. It was a broad refresh of planetary variety and presentation, with new features such as water landings and Solar-class ship customization, plus the community expedition The Liquidators. It was not a single new mission or cosmetic pack.
How Worlds Part I changed planets
The update aimed to make familiar planet types look and feel less alike. Hello Games expanded diversity across lush, frozen, desert, scorched, radioactive, and toxic worlds, with changes to landscapes, skies, lighting, plants, minerals, and wildlife. Its official Update 5.0 overview and notes describe the changes in detail.
More varied biomes, skies, and wildlife
- Some lush planets gained floating islands.
- Frozen worlds received new flora and mineral formations, while deserts gained more biodiversity.
- New sky colors and more varied night lighting altered the appearance of planets.
- Additional insect-like creatures included hostile species as well as insects players could observe, harvest, or adopt as companions.
Water became more dynamic—and usable for landings
Oceans gained a wider range of colors, and storms could bring rough seas and large swells. New ship technology let starships land on water and be summoned from it. The update also added skylight base parts for selected building sets.
What returning players should know about bases
Hello Games said the update did not reset underlying terrain shapes or move existing planetary bases. That continuity note matters if you are returning to a built-up planet: the visual and environmental refresh was not described as a terrain reset.

Clouds, weather, lighting, and rendering
Hello Games rewrote its volumetric cloud system to add detail and make cloud cover vary with a planet’s weather and time of day. The update also reworked shadows and environmental effects, including rain, fog, snow, wind, particles, and storms, with the developer describing visual and performance improvements.
On the rendering side, trees, rocks, and grass moved to a GPU-based system, and terrain generation incorporated dual marching cubes voxel meshing. These are technical changes behind the visual refresh, not settings players need to operate manually.

The DLSS performance claim
The 5.0 notes added DLSS 3 support for compatible RTX PC players and said it could “multiply performance by up to 4X compared to traditional rendering.” That is Hello Games’ stated maximum, not an independent benchmark or a guaranteed result for every PC. Actual performance depends on hardware and conditions.
New gameplay, customization, and expedition content
The Liquidators expedition
The Liquidators was Expedition Fourteen, a community-driven combat expedition centered on fighting insect-like biological horrors. Hello Games’ July 17, 2024 announcement compared its inspiration to Starship Troopers and emphasized shared community progress.

What the “Part I” name means
Hello Games described the update as the first part of a broader Worlds effort. In its July 17, 2024 announcement, Sean Murray said: “The update is called Worlds Part I, because I guess obviously… more will follow.” The name signals the developer’s stated plan at that time; it does not, by itself, specify when later parts would arrive.
