If you mean Angry Birds 2, there’s no officially established best bird for every level. Match the bird to the obstacle: Rovio describes Shade as able to pass through solid matter and attack behind defenses, while Melody inhales objects and propels them at enemies. If you mean another Angry Birds game, the answer may differ because unlock rules are game-specific.
Which Angry Birds game do you mean?
“Best bird to unlock” has no franchise-wide answer. The games use different unlock systems, and a character or unlock tip from one game may not apply to another. Activision’s support instructions, for example, say birds in Angry Birds Trilogy must be unlocked separately in each included game.
Which bird should you choose in Angry Birds 2?
Choose for the level’s layout and the job you need done, rather than assuming one bird is strongest everywhere. Rovio’s descriptions point to two different uses:
| Bird | Officially described ability | When that ability may help |
|---|---|---|
| Shade | Can pass through solid matter and attack behind pig defenses. Rovio’s Shade announcement | Consider Shade when solid defenses block a direct attack. |
| Melody | Inhales objects and propels them at enemies. Rovio’s Melody announcement | Consider Melody when objects in the structure can be used against enemies. |
These are descriptions of abilities, not comparative performance tests. The available official information does not show that either bird has higher win rates or is best across all levels. Check your flock and the level before deciding.

Check the bird’s power in your flock
In Angry Birds 2, tap a bird on the Main Flock Screen to see its bird power and your flock power, according to the Angry Birds 2 Help Center. Use those in-game figures alongside the bird’s ability and the level’s obstacles; they do not, by themselves, establish a universal ranking.
Can you unlock Shade now?
Rovio announced a Shade recruitment event running from March 11 through May 7, 2026. In that announcement, permanent recruitment was tied to collected feathers or an in-game shop purchase, for players who had cleared Saga Level 22. That event window has passed. The announcement does not establish whether Shade is currently available through another route, so check the in-game recruitment options rather than relying on the expired event details.

What if you mean Angry Birds Trilogy?
Do not apply Angry Birds 2 character advice to Angry Birds Trilogy. Activision’s support page gives a specific Mighty Eagle unlock method for Trilogy: fail the same level three times in a row, then wait for the results screen before retrying. This instruction applies to that game; it is not a general unlock method for the series.

Angry Birds 2 spells are cards with distinct effects, but they are disabled in PvP features including Arena and Mighty Eagle’s Bootcamp, according to the game’s Help Center. Whether spells matter therefore depends on the mode you are playing.
