For a first solo playthrough, Lilith is a sensible default if you value mobility and flexibility. But Borderlands 1 has no universally best character established by the official class information: Roland, Mordecai, and Brick can be better fits depending on how you prefer to fight. Choose the class whose combat style sounds most enjoyable, then shape it further through skill points.

Which Borderlands 1 character is best for solo play?

Lilith is a practical pick for solo newcomers who want mobility and an escape option. That is a player-focused recommendation, not an official ranking or a proven claim that she outperforms the others. The official Borderlands manual identifies four playable classes and their skill systems; it does not establish a strongest character.

If Lilith’s style does not appeal to you, pick the class that best matches your preferred combat rhythm. A character you enjoy playing is a better first-run choice than chasing an unsupported “best” pick.

How do the four characters differ?

Borderlands 1’s playable characters are Roland the Soldier, Lilith the Siren, Mordecai the Hunter, and Brick the Berserker. Use this comparison to match class identity to your preferences, not as a performance ranking.

Lilith Siren Mobility and a flexible solo approach Phasewalk
Roland Soldier A Soldier identity and turret/support play Deployable turret
Mordecai Hunter Precision-oriented play Bloodwing
Brick Berserker Aggressive, close-range combat Close-range Berserker style

Pick Lilith for mobility

Lilith is the broadest recommendation here for a solo newcomer who values being able to reposition and having an escape option. Choose her if that kind of flexibility sounds more appealing than committing to a turret, precision focus, or close-range approach.

Pick Roland for turret and support play

Roland suits players drawn to the Soldier identity and a deployable turret/support style. He is a straightforward thematic match if you want your action-skill approach to center on a turret.

Can you change your play style after choosing?

Character choice sets your class identity and action skill, but it does not lock you into one fixed build. The official manual describes three skill trees for each character, and skill points let you specialize within those trees. That gives you room to develop your chosen character in the direction you enjoy as the playthrough progresses.

How to make the choice

  1. Decide what sounds fun: mobility with Lilith, turret/support play with Roland, precision and Bloodwing with Mordecai, or close-range aggression with Brick.
  2. For a first solo run, lean toward Lilith if flexibility matters most. Treat that as a conditional recommendation, not a guarantee of easier play or higher power.
  3. Choose another class if its combat rhythm appeals more. There is no official universal ranking that should override your preference.
  4. Specialize as you play. Use skill points across your character’s three skill trees to refine the build.
