The strongest choice depends on the game mode, the map, how much cash you have, which upgrade path you commit to, and what job the defense needs to do. Community tier lists can still help, but only when you read them as a snapshot tied to a specific mode and game version.
Why a universal ranking misleads
Bloons TD 6 has a large tower roster, and most monkeys have three upgrade paths. Heroes sit in a separate category from monkey towers. Placement is limited by each map’s layout, and modes such as CHIMPS change the rules enough that a tower that excels in standard play can be a poor pick there. A current multi-mode strategy guide makes this point directly: a single universal tier list can mislead because tower choice depends on the roster, the upgrade paths, the heroes, the map’s placement limits and the mode’s rules.
So when a headline asks for the best monkey, the honest answer is a conditional one. Name the mode and map first, then the role you need the tower to fill, then choose the path.
Set the scope before you rank anything
Three questions narrow the field quickly:
- Mode: Are you playing standard rounds, a restricted mode such as CHIMPS, or a challenge with its own rules? Rankings built for one mode should not be carried over to another without checking.
- Map: Does the map offer good sightlines and enough placement spots for the tower you have in mind? A strong tower in an open corner can be weak on a cramped track.
- Job: Do you need early-round defense, sustained damage, support for other towers, income, or area coverage? These are different roles, and a tower that is excellent at one is not automatically excellent at the others.
Compare candidates on the right axes
When you compare two towers, judge them on the same five points rather than on a single overall score:

- Upgrade path: Compare the specific path, not the monkey name. Community CHIMPS rankings are organized by path, so a monkey can rank high on one path and low on another.
- Cost to power: How much cash you must spend before the tower performs the job you need.
- Early versus late role: Some towers are useful only in the first rounds, and some only become decisive later.
- Map and placement fit: Whether the tower can be placed where it reaches the track efficiently.
- Synergy: How it works with the rest of your defense, including heroes and other towers.
No public source we reviewed provides a consistent cross-mode dataset or controlled benchmark, so there are no reliable numeric scores to compare across modes. Treat any tier placement as a judgment about a specific setup, not a measured result.
Current examples and what they actually show
CHIMPS: path-by-path community rankings
The most detailed current ranking is a community CHIMPS tier list, labeled version 56.x, published by Reddit contributors in 2026. It ranks individual upgrade paths and discusses how they interact. One example in the discussion describes the Blade Maelstrom path’s synergy with Thunder’s Decree and its use as a burst-damage tower. That is useful for understanding why a path can be strong in combination, but it is community analysis rather than an official ranking, and it applies to CHIMPS under that version’s balance.

Early-game pairing: Sub Monkey and Ninja Monkey
A current tier-list search result describes Sub Monkey and Ninja Monkey as a strong starting combination, while noting they remain useful only until about round 30. This comes from a secondary summary rather than a primary source, so verify the claim in-game before relying on it. Treat it as a starting hypothesis: test the pairing on your map and check whether it still earns its cash after the early rounds.
Heroes are a separate question
If you are asking about the best hero for a mode, do not answer with a monkey tower. Game guides list heroes separately, so a hero comparison should use the hero criteria above and be presented in its own section of your decision.

How to check whether a ranking is still current
- Note the game version the list is labeled with. A list tied to version 56.x describes that balance, not necessarily today’s.
- Open the game’s update notes from Ninja Kiwi, the developer, and check whether any changes affect the tower, the path or the mode you care about.
- Confirm the mode rules still match the list’s assumptions. A ranking that is correct for CHIMPS may not hold in another mode.
- Run a short test on the map you plan to play, comparing two candidates at the same round, and record the cash spent and the defense you have at that point.
When a recommendation is worth trusting
A recommendation is most useful when it names its mode, its version, its path and its intended role. Be cautious with lists that rank monkeys without these details, or that claim one tower is best everywhere. If you share your mode and map, a narrower answer can be built from the same criteria above.

The best monkey is the one whose upgrade path does the job your mode, map and round demand, at a cost you can afford. Use community tier lists for CHIMPS only with their version number in view, and check the current update notes before trusting any placement.
