In Dungeons & Dragons, a wizard learns magic through study, a warlock gains it through a pact, and a sorcerer’s magic is innate. At the table, they also differ in their key ability scores, spell access, and how they recover spell slots. The details below use the 2024 Basic Rules unless labeled otherwise.
How each class gets its magic
Wizard: magic learned through study
Wizards approach magic as something to learn and understand. Their spellbook is central to the class, supporting a style built around study, spell choice, and preparation. The 2024 rules give wizards the Arcane Recovery feature as well.
Warlock: magic gained through a pact
A warlock’s power comes from a pact with a mysterious, otherworldly entity. That connection gives the class a supernatural story hook, but it does not mean the patron must appear in every scene or that the pact is necessarily hostile.
Sorcerer: magic that is innate
A sorcerer draws on magic within them. The class pairs that innate source with Sorcery Points and features such as Innate Sorcery, giving it a different set of ways to shape or use its magic than a wizard or warlock.

Key differences at a glance
| Class | Source of magic | Spellcasting ability | Distinctive approach | 2024 spell-slot recovery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wizard | Study and learned magic | Intelligence | Spellbook, spell preparation, and Arcane Recovery | Arcane Recovery can restore eligible expended slots after a Short Rest; it has limits and cannot restore slots of level 6 or higher. |
| Warlock | A pact with an otherworldly entity | Charisma | Pact Magic and pact features | Expended Pact Magic slots return after a Short or Long Rest. |
| Sorcerer | Innate magic | Charisma | Spellcasting, Font of Magic, and Sorcery Points | Expended spell slots return after a Long Rest. |
These are different class mechanics, not a ranking of which class is strongest. The 2024 wizard and sorcerer use the Spellcasting feature, while the warlock uses Pact Magic; their rest-based recovery works differently.
What ability score does each class use?
- Wizard: Intelligence.
- Warlock: Charisma.
- Sorcerer: Charisma.
That distinction can guide character building: a wizard emphasizes Intelligence for spellcasting, while a warlock or sorcerer emphasizes Charisma. Check the rules edition you are using when selecting features or planning a character, since class progression and specific rules can differ.

Which one should you play?
- Choose wizard if the appeal is a scholarly spellcaster whose spellbook and preparation are part of the fun.
- Choose warlock if you like the narrative possibilities of a pact and a class with its own Pact Magic resource pattern.
- Choose sorcerer if you want a character whose power is innate and whose class features include Sorcery Points.
Think about both the character concept and the resource pattern you want to manage. No class is universally best; the right fit depends on the kind of character and play experience you want.

The comparison above follows the 2024 D&D Beyond Basic Rules. The 2014 rules do not have identical class progressions. For example, a wizard chooses an Arcane Tradition at level 2 under the 2014 rules, compared with choosing a subclass at level 3 under the 2024 rules. A warlock chooses a patron at level 1 in the 2014 rules, while the 2024 rules grant a subclass at level 3.
