“Deluxe,” “Collector’s” and “preorder bonus” are not standardized package names: publishers decide what each includes, and the contents can differ by game, format, platform, retailer and region. To find out what you will actually get, check the itemized listing for the exact edition you plan to buy—and treat preorder bonuses as separate benefits with their own eligibility and redemption terms.
What do the edition labels mean?
The label alone does not tell you what is in the package. A Standard Edition may include the base game and little else; a Deluxe Edition might add digital items, physical collectibles, or both. A Collector’s Edition can include the game as a download or code alongside physical memorabilia. A preorder bonus is an incentive tied to ordering before a stated deadline, and may or may not be included with every edition.
Compare the contents list rather than assuming one tier includes another tier’s items. Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII Remake edition guide, for example, distinguishes Standard, Physical Deluxe, Digital Deluxe and 1st Class packages.
What should you compare before buying?
- Base game and format: Confirm that the game is included and whether it comes on a disc, as a download, or as a code in a box.
- Digital extras: Check each listed game item, DLC, cosmetic, soundtrack, artbook or other download. Do not assume a bonus in one edition is also included in another.
- Physical goods: Look for specific items such as a steelbook, printed artbook, statue or figure—and confirm which edition includes each one.
- Preorder terms: Check the deadline, the editions that qualify and whether an item is exclusive to a bundle rather than the standalone edition.
- Redemption: Find out whether a code comes in the box or on a receipt, where to redeem it, and whether digital extras download automatically.
- Platform, retailer and region: Verify the exact platform version, seller and local-market listing. Names and package contents can vary across territories and formats.
How can physical and digital Deluxe editions differ?
They can contain different extras rather than being the same package in different formats. In Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII Remake listing, Physical Deluxe includes Cactuar Summoning Materia, a steelbook, physical soundtrack and physical artbook. Digital Deluxe lists the base game, Cactuar and Carbuncle Summoning Materia, a digital soundtrack and a digital artbook. The 1st Class Edition adds a Play Arts Cloud Strife and Hardy Daytona box set to its listed contents. These are details for that game’s editions, not a general definition of “Deluxe.”

How do preorder bonuses work?
A preorder benefit may be separate from the content of a Deluxe or Collector’s Edition. It can also have a deadline, apply only to certain editions, or require a separate code. Read the bonus terms alongside the edition contents, and check whether a listed item is a preorder incentive or an item included in the package itself.
Two publisher announcements illustrate why the details matter. In its 2025 Madden NFL 26 preorder details, EA listed different incentives and dates, and specified that a MUT player item was bundle-only rather than part of the standalone Deluxe Edition. Kojima Productions’ 2025 Death Stranding 2: On the Beach announcement listed preorder in-game items separately from Digital Deluxe items; its 48-hour early access applied to Digital Deluxe or Collector’s Edition purchasers. Those announced dates and benefits are historical examples, not current offers.

How are bonuses redeemed?
The purchase format can change how bonus content arrives. PlayStation Support’s Horizon Forbidden West support page says physical bonus content for that game uses a voucher code, while digital bonus content is included with the download. Its Digital Deluxe list includes outfits, weapons, resources, a Machine Strike piece, photo-mode additions, a digital artbook and soundtrack, and a digital graphic novel. PlayStation also says that title’s preorder bonuses were unavailable after its preorder period ended.
That process is specific to Horizon Forbidden West. For another game, check the support page or product listing for where a code is supplied, where it is redeemed and whether the content is already attached to the download.

Why do platform and region matter?
A named edition may not be sold in every market or use the same format everywhere. Bandai Namco Europe’s 2022 Elden Ring announcement described its Launch Edition as exclusive to EMEA and distinguished console discs from a boxed PC code. The announcement also listed a preorder Digital Adventure Guide and gesture, noting that the gesture could also be earned in-game; its Digital Deluxe included a digital artbook and original soundtrack. These are historical launch details, not evidence of a current offer.
