Roblox first went mobile for gameplay in December 2012, when its ROBLOX Mobile app arrived on iOS. The Android version followed on July 16, 2014, about 19 months later.
What “went mobile” means
Roblox had an iOS app before December 2012, but it did not let players run games. In a Game Developer postmortem published May 20, 2013, David York explained that the earlier app did not facilitate gameplay. The December 2012 release is the milestone that matters for the question: it was the point at which people could actually play Roblox experiences on a phone or tablet.
Key dates
| Platform | Announced availability | Initial distribution and devices | What it added |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS | December 12, 2012 (company press release) | iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch | Gameplay: discovering and playing user-created levels, browsing user-built models, and buying avatar clothing |
| Android | July 16, 2014 (company announcement) | Google Play at launch | Play, social interaction, and chat across mobile and desktop users |
iOS: the first mobile gameplay release
Roblox’s December 12, 2012 press release, titled “ROBLOX Brings Top Desktop Gaming Experience to iPad and iPhone,” said the company had released ROBLOX Mobile to let users play ROBLOX on iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Some secondary timelines give December 11, 2012 instead. The primary announcement is dated December 12, and York’s 2013 postmortem confirms only the month and year, so December 2012 is the safe answer and December 12 is the dated announcement. I could not confirm the exact timestamp of the App Store listing.
Android: later expansion
The Android app was announced on July 16, 2014, under the headline “ROBLOX Unveils Android Version of Award Winning Game Creation Platform.” It arrived through Google Play. Because iOS already offered gameplay, Android is best understood as expansion to a second mobile operating system rather than the start of mobile play.

Launch-era figures
The company’s announcements included figures that reflect the moment they were published, not today’s scale:
- About 9.8 million user-created levels, according to Roblox’s 2012 iOS announcement.
- More than 60 million players across PC, Mac, and iOS, according to Roblox’s 2014 Android announcement.
Current mobile requirements
Roblox Support’s “Roblox Mobile System Requirements” page, accessed October 8, 2026, says the iOS app requires iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 or higher, and lists compatible minimum Apple devices. For Android, Roblox says the wide range of devices means it cannot guarantee optimal performance on every model, even when the listed operating system conditions are met. These requirements change over time, so check the support page for the current list before relying on them. They are not the requirements that applied at launch.
