In most of them he is shown grieving, shocked or subdued rather than in tears, and the best-known grief scene is not a clearly shown breakdown. Whether he cries at all depends on which continuity you mean. Game canon, licensed comics and animation are separate timelines, and the secondary write-ups available for this question do not establish a reliable scene-by-scene record for any of them.
Short answer by continuity
The table below separates the examples that can be described with some confidence from those that remain leads. Episode numbers, issue numbers and timestamps are not stated in the available material, so none are given here.

| Continuity or adaptation | Example | What the scene shows | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mainline game | Sonic Adventure 2 | Grief and restraint after Shadow’s apparent sacrifice; no clearly shown tears | Described in secondary commentary; not a confirmed crying scene |
| Mainline spin-off | Sonic and the Secret Rings | Shahra sheds the tears; Sonic helps her release her held-back emotion | Described in secondary commentary; scene reference not stated |
| Comics | Archie and Fleetway series | Named as possible examples of Sonic crying | Lead only; issue reference not stated |
| Animation | Sonic X | Named as a possible example of Sonic crying | Lead only; episode reference not stated |
Sonic Adventure 2: grief without visible tears
The emotional moment most often cited for the mainline games is in Sonic Adventure 2, where Sonic reacts to Shadow’s apparent sacrifice. Secondary commentary describes his response as grief and restraint. That is a fair reading of a sad scene, but it is not the same as showing Sonic in tears. Describe it as grief, not as a crying scene.
Sonic and the Secret Rings: the tears belong to Shahra
The grief-and-tears moment in Sonic and the Secret Rings is easy to misremember. In the scene as described, Sonic helps Shahra release her held-back tears, so it is Shahra who cries. Credit the tears to her when you cite this example.

Comics and anime: leads, not verified examples
Secondary discussion names the Archie and Fleetway comic series and Sonic X as places where Sonic is shown crying. The available material does not give an issue, episode or panel for any of these, so they should be treated as leads until someone checks the primary text or footage. Until then, do not attribute a specific tearful moment to them.
Claims to avoid
- Do not state that SEGA has an official rule that Sonic cannot cry. The claim circulates among fans, and no official quotation supporting it was found in the available sources.
- Do not merge game canon, comics, anime and films into one timeline. A scene can be official in one adaptation and absent from the others.
- Do not treat “sad” or “emotional” as equivalent to “crying”. Describe what the scene actually shows.
- Do not call any scene the first or most famous example of Sonic crying unless it has been verified against the primary text.
How to check a specific scene
- Name the continuity first: the game, the comic series, the animated series or the film.
- Watch or read the primary scene, not a summary, and note whether tears are visible or whether the character only looks sad, angry, frightened or shaken.
- Record the title, episode or issue, and the position in the scene, so the claim can be checked later.
- If the scene involves a second character who cries, attribute the tears to that character.
Evidence limits
No statistics apply to this question, and no named creator, official body or official document was found stating whether Sonic cries. The scene descriptions available are secondary, so the examples above are reliable enough for framing but not for episode-level citation.
