If Fortnite closes by itself, start with its files, Easy Anti-Cheat, graphics settings, and background apps. If Windows reboots, blue-screens, freezes completely, or powers off, treat it as a PC stability problem—not just a Fortnite installation issue. The symptom tells you which fixes to try first.
Identify what “crash” means
Before changing settings, note when the failure happens: before the title screen, while logging in, in the lobby, or when joining a match. Record any error code and whether the Epic Games Launcher stays open. Also consider whether the problem began after a Fortnite, Windows, or graphics-driver update, or after connecting a new device.

A game crash is not the same as stuttering, lag, or a network disconnect. If Fortnite remains open but runs unevenly, that is a performance issue; if it stays open but loses its connection, investigate the network separately.

- Restart Windows. Close Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher, then restart the PC before testing again.
- Disconnect newly connected devices. Test with only a keyboard and mouse. Epic documents a controller-related “The application has hung and will now close” launch issue; for that specific pattern, it recommends disconnecting the controller, restarting, and retesting. This is an isolation test, not evidence that controllers cause every crash. Epic’s controller-related launch guidance
- Verify Fortnite’s files. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, find Fortnite, click its three-dot menu, choose Manage, then Verify. Verification checks for damaged or different local files and repairs them; it does not affect saved data, though it may download replacements. It is less disruptive than reinstalling. If verification repeatedly finds damaged files, do not assume the game installation is the only problem. Check available drive space, storage health, permissions, antivirus interference, and broader system stability.

If Fortnite is “running” but will not open, repair Easy Anti-Cheat
EAC installation or service problems can prevent Fortnite from launching. Epic’s troubleshooting for a game that appears to run without opening includes verifying files and repairing EAC. To try the repair:
- In Epic Games Launcher, locate Fortnite’s installation directory.
- Open
FortniteGameBinariesWin64EasyAntiCheat. - Open EasyAntiCheat Setup, select the current game, and choose Repair Service.
- Restart Windows and test Fortnite.
The installation location can differ, so use Epic’s current instructions if that path is not present. For an “Easy Anti-Cheat is not installed” error, follow Epic’s official repair procedure rather than downloading replacement files from another site. A damaged launcher cache can contribute to an incorrect launch state or update problems. Clearing it is a different step from deleting Fortnite itself. Epic includes cache clearing in its general crash troubleshooting sequence; use its current instructions for the precise Windows folder and labels, which may change. Fix graphics, rendering, and display problems
Update the graphics driver—or roll back if the timing points to it
Epic recommends updating graphics drivers for Fortnite graphics problems, but the newest driver is not automatically the most stable for every PC. If crashes began immediately after a driver update, try a clean reinstall or return to a known-stable version instead of updating repeatedly.
For laptops, the manufacturer’s validated driver may work better with hybrid graphics or power management than a generic driver. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
Test another rendering mode
If the crash involves a black screen, freezing, or DirectX 12, test a different rendering option. Epic says Performance Mode may help when DirectX 12 causes these symptoms and documents enabling additional command-line arguments in Epic Games Launcher with -d3d12 -es31. Its broader troubleshooting guidance also discusses forcing DirectX 11. These options and launcher labels can change, so follow Epic’s current directions and test one change at a time. Performance Mode, DirectX 11, and DirectX 12 are not interchangeable labels. Use the specific option Epic documents for the current version rather than guessing which command-line argument corresponds to a mode.
Reset local graphics and display settings
If the problem followed a game update or settings change, reset Fortnite’s local configuration. Epic identifies the file GameUserSettings in %localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. Press Windows key + R, enter %localappdata%, then open FortniteGame → Saved → Config → WindowsClient. Back up the file to your desktop or rename it to GameUserSettings.old, then launch Fortnite so it can create fresh settings. If the game is open but invisible, also check whether fullscreen placed its window on another monitor or off-screen. Test windowed or borderless mode if you can reach the settings, or reset the local settings file as described above.
Check which GPU Fortnite uses
On a laptop or PC with integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm that Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance GPU. Check Windows graphics preferences, the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon settings, and any manufacturer GPU-switching utility. Plug a laptop into power and check its power mode. Selecting the dedicated GPU can help with the wrong-GPU problem, but it will not resolve every hybrid-graphics, driver, thermal, or power issue. Epic’s GPU-selection guidance
Isolate overlays, background apps, and security software
Close nonessential software and test again. Common isolation candidates include Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD recording overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, streaming or capture software, RGB utilities, motherboard-control tools, and hardware-monitoring apps. An overlay conflict is possible, not certain.
Epic’s general troubleshooting sequence also includes disabling background applications and using a Windows clean boot as an isolation test. Epic also suggests a Windows Security exclusion for some cases where Fortnite shows as running but does not open. If you test this, first confirm Fortnite was installed through the official Epic Games Launcher. In Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add or remove exclusions, then add only the Fortnite folder. An exclusion reduces protection: do not exclude an entire drive or unrelated files, and remove the exclusion if it does not help. Do not disable antivirus indefinitely. If Windows itself crashes, stop treating it as a Fortnite-only problem
A demanding game can expose instability that lighter apps do not. That does not establish that Fortnite damaged the PC—or prove that any one component has failed. If other demanding games also crash, or Fortnite makes Windows restart, blue-screen, freeze completely, or power off, investigate the PC before repeatedly reinstalling the game.
- Crash at launch: Files, EAC, drivers, rendering, or configuration are reasonable early suspects.
- Crash after several minutes: Heat, power, memory, or GPU load become more plausible.
- Instant power-off: Prioritize temperatures, power delivery, and the PSU.
- Reboot or BSOD: Record the stop code and look for driver, hardware, or Windows errors.
Use these checks cautiously and change one thing at a time:
- Return CPU and GPU overclocks or undervolts to stock. If memory instability is suspected, temporarily disable XMP/EXPO and retest.
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures while launching and playing. Limits vary by exact hardware, so compare readings with the manufacturer’s specifications rather than a universal temperature number. Keep vents clear, remove dust safely, and ensure airflow.
- Test another demanding 3D game. If it also fails, Fortnite’s files are less likely to be the whole explanation.
- Check storage health with the drive manufacturer’s official utility and ensure both the game drive and Windows system drive have adequate free space.
- If crashes continue beyond Fortnite, consider a memory diagnostic and review Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer for display-driver failures, hardware errors, unexpected shutdowns, or Fortnite process failures.
Do not keep relaunching Fortnite on a PC that is repeatedly shutting down or showing signs of overheating. A game reinstall cannot repair faulty RAM, a failing drive, unstable power, a thermal problem, or a Windows-level fault.

Epic’s troubleshooting sequence places reinstalling after steps such as file verification, launcher-cache clearing, driver checks, and background-app isolation. Reinstalling Fortnite is reasonable if files remain corrupted, the installation is incomplete, or other fixes fail. If the same problem follows the game to another drive, the installation drive is less likely to be the sole cause. Confirm you can sign in to your Epic account before uninstalling.
Reinstalling may help an installation problem, but it will not fix a bad driver, overheating, unstable power, memory errors, or a failing drive. Reinstalling the Epic Games Launcher is a later option if launcher problems persist. Epic’s full troubleshooting sequence also includes drive checks and trying another drive. Save evidence before contacting support
Capture the error message or stop code and check Windows Reliability Monitor for the time of the failure. Epic asks for diagnostics collected soon after a crash, while the relevant logs are available:
- DxDiag: Press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiag, press Enter, and choose Save All Information to createdxdiag.txt. - MSInfo: Press Windows key + R, enter
msinfo32, then choose File → Save. - Fortnite logs: Press Windows key + R and enter
%localappdata%FortniteGameSavedLogs. Collect the relevant game and launcher logs after reproducing the issue.

Will verifying Fortnite delete my progress?
Epic says file verification repairs damaged or different local files without affecting saved data. It may download replacement files.
Should I switch from DirectX 12?
It is worth testing another supported rendering option if DirectX 12 coincides with a crash, freeze, or black screen. Follow Epic’s current instructions, change one setting at a time, and reverse the change if it does not help.

Can Easy Anti-Cheat cause Fortnite not to launch?
An EAC installation or service problem can prevent launch. If Fortnite appears as running without opening, verify files and try Epic’s EAC repair steps; that symptom alone does not prove EAC is the cause.
Why does Fortnite crash only after an update?
An update can coincide with damaged files, a changed local setting, a rendering or driver conflict, or a wider system issue. Verify files first, then consider resetting the local settings file and testing another rendering option.
Why does my whole PC restart when Fortnite launches?
A restart or power-off points beyond an ordinary game-process crash. Check temperatures, power, overclocks, RAM, GPU stability, storage, and Windows error records; test whether other demanding games also fail.
Should I reinstall Windows?
Not as an early Fortnite fix. Verify files, repair EAC, test graphics and background software, and investigate system-wide errors first. A Windows reinstall will not repair failing hardware.
Do I need a graphics-card upgrade?
A Fortnite crash alone is not evidence that you need a new GPU. Check current system requirements for your platform and mode, drivers, temperatures, and whether other demanding games fail before considering hardware.
What if Fortnite is the only game that crashes?
Start with Fortnite’s files, EAC, launcher cache, local configuration, rendering mode, and overlays. If Windows remains stable and other demanding games work, those game-specific checks are more useful than assuming a hardware failure.
