What “questionable” means—and what it does not
The NFL defines Questionable as “uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game.” Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate; Out means he will not play. The label signals uncertainty about availability, not a fantasy-points forecast or a promised workload. NFL injury-report definitions
The NFL has said that approximately 95 percent of players carrying the former Probable designation played in prior years. That is a historical figure about a label the league removed; it is not a play-probability estimate for players currently listed as Questionable.
How to decide whether to start or bench him
Compare the questionable player’s likely availability and role with the replacement’s opportunity, then weigh the cost of a zero if the player is inactive. The designation alone cannot answer the start-or-sit question.

- Availability: Check the current official team or NFL report. A midweek injury designation is not the final game-day inactive decision.
- Workload if active: Consider whether the player is expected to handle his usual role or could be limited. An active player with a substantially reduced role may still be a worse choice than a healthy alternative.
- Replacement value: Compare the alternative’s role and expected opportunities, along with each player’s ceiling and floor under your league’s scoring rules.
- Cost of waiting: Check whether you can still make a legal swap if the questionable player is inactive. Waiting is less useful if your replacement locks first or no credible alternative is available.

Use kickoff timing and lineup locks
Keep a potential replacement in a roster slot you can still change when the questionable player’s status becomes clearer. Follow the deadline shown by your own fantasy service and league settings rather than assuming all platforms use the same lock rule.

NFL.com Fantasy’s 2025 rules say managers may change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start, according to the NFL.com clock. This is NFL.com Fantasy’s rule; it should not be generalized to other platforms. NFL.com Fantasy Official Rules 2025
- Check the official status and the player’s scheduled kickoff.
- Identify a viable replacement whose game has not started and confirm your platform still allows the change.
- Recheck official inactive information and reliable current reporting close to kickoff, then make the swap before the applicable lineup lock.
The NFL’s 2026–27 schedule information lists Game Status Report filing deadlines that vary by game day, so the timing of reports depends on the schedule. Do not treat an earlier practice-day status as the final active/inactive decision. NFL Football Operations: 2026–27 important dates

Check your platform’s own injury and roster rules
Platform behavior can affect what options remain after a status change. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury/inactive list to update player injury status. ESPN also says an IR-slot player’s status changing from OUT or IR to QUESTIONABLE or DOUBTFUL does not make the user’s roster invalid. The NFL definitions establish what the designation means, but they do not provide a universal probability that a Questionable player will play or a forecast of his fantasy production. Without a named player, matchup, scoring format, platform, and current role information, a specific start-or-sit call is not supported. Make the decision from the latest status, the likely role, the replacement’s value, and the time left to swap.
