Night is the normal timing for the ordinary boss encounter. Fight her during the day only if you are deliberately going for the Terraprisma, because her daytime enrage and the reward condition work against each other. Remix and Zenith worlds follow a different enrage rule, so check the seed before you rely on this advice.
Night is the standard fight
The Empress of Light is a Hardmode boss, generally fought at night and available after Plantera. She is optional for progression, but the Official Terraria Wiki describes her as a serious challenge even on her first availability after Plantera. Night is the timing most players should use for a normal clear, because it lets you learn her attack pattern without the daytime enrage.

Daytime enrage and the Terraprisma condition
In standard worlds she becomes enraged during daytime. Her attack visuals turn bright yellow, and the wiki describes her attacks as normally lethal in a single hit. This is the reason daytime is a special challenge rather than an upgrade.
The Terraprisma has a strict condition: every point of damage dealt to the Empress must be inflicted during daytime. If you deal even one point of damage at night, the daytime reward condition is not met. Plan the whole fight around daylight rather than starting in the evening and hoping to finish before sunrise.

Using a Prismatic Lacewing to control timing
Prismatic Lacewings spawn at night in the Hallow. A captured Lacewing can be released when you are ready, which separates the natural nighttime spawn from the actual boss start. This gives you control over when the fight begins.
- Inside the Hallow: a captured Lacewing can be held until your arena, potions and equipment are ready.
- Outside the Hallow: a released Lacewing disappears quickly, so summon the Empress only where you can kill her immediately.
Preparing for a daytime Terraprisma attempt
The Official Terraria Wiki strategy guide recommends starting just after sunrise, at 4:30 AM, to make the most of the daytime window. The guide is undated, so treat the clock time as a planning figure that depends on your world’s time of day rather than a fixed timer. The same guide makes several practical recommendations:

- Prioritize damage and mobility over defense and regeneration, because the enraged attacks hit hard enough that survival-focused gear is less useful than keeping your damage output high.
- Build a wide arena with separated platform rows so you have room to move between attacks.
- Expect the daytime fight to be harder than the night fight in every respect, including the lethal attack pattern.
Remix and Zenith worlds
In Remix and Zenith worlds, the enrage is tied to being above the surface rather than to the daytime clock. That changes the advice. A fight that is safe at night in a standard world may trigger enrage in a seed where surface location controls the rule. Confirm the seed’s behavior before you summon her, rather than assuming the standard day-night split applies.
