Mass Effect 2’s Haestrom sequence is about dark energy, not dark matter. The distinction matters: Kal’Reegar’s explanation for the star’s strange behavior is fictional dialogue and an in-universe hypothesis, not a real account of how either phenomenon works.
What is happening to Haestrom’s sun?
On Haestrom in Mass Effect 2, Kal’Reegar tells Shepard that the star appears to be aging abnormally. He says, “Dark energy. It’s reducing the mass of the star’s interior.” When Tali asks whether that theory is right, Reegar says he can’t comment on what it means, only that the scientists are worried. The exchange is presented in a hosted game-script transcript.
That is a character’s explanation inside a science-fiction story, not a confirmed cause established by the game or a general rule about Mass Effect technology. The dialogue proposes that dark energy may be affecting this star; it does not demonstrate that the proposed mechanism is real astrophysics.
Is Mass Effect talking about dark matter or dark energy?
Haestrom’s dialogue names dark energy. In real cosmology, dark matter and dark energy refer to different unknowns, and neither term is a synonym for the other.

| Term | What it refers to | How it is inferred or described | Estimated share of total mass-energy | Mass Effect connection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dark matter | A form of matter whose composition is unknown | Inferred mainly from its gravitational effects; it does not emit, absorb, or reflect light in the usual electromagnetic sense | 26.8% — NASA glossary estimate, accessed 2026 | Not the term used in the Haestrom exchange |
| Dark energy | An unknown component associated with the universe’s expansion | Its nature remains unknown; NASA associates it with the universe’s expansion | 68.3% — NASA glossary estimate, accessed 2026 | The term Kal’Reegar uses in the fictional explanation for Haestrom’s star |
NASA’s glossary describes dark matter and dark energy separately. The percentages are NASA’s estimates of their shares of total mass-energy, not measurements from the game.
Does the dark energy plot in Mass Effect 2 go anywhere?
The Haestrom scene makes dark energy feel like a potentially important thread, but the exchange itself does not supply a final explanation of the star’s condition. A broader connection to the trilogy’s ending was discussed later by Drew Karpyshyn, a former BioWare writer and lead writer on Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. His official biography confirms his Mass Effect 2 role.

In a retrospective interview, Karpyshyn described an unrealized ending concept in which organics’ use of dark energy could affect spacetime and hasten the universe’s end. He put one part of the idea this way: “Dark Energy was something that only organics could access because of various techno-science magic reasons we hadn’t decided on yet.” He characterized the concept as not fully fleshed out. It is creator speculation about an undeveloped idea—not the released trilogy’s explanation or settled franchise canon. Read the interview.

“Dark matter” is a familiar phrase, so it makes a catchy hook for a piece about a science-fiction game and cosmology. But if you mean Haestrom’s star or the dialogue that names the phenomenon, the accurate term is dark energy. Dark matter is a real scientific concept in its own right; it simply is not what Reegar says is affecting the star.
