The PS5’s air vents are on the sides and back of the console. Keep at least 10 cm of free space around each side, and don’t block the openings with a wall, a cramped enclosure, dust or fabric.
Where to find the PS5 vents
Look along the console’s sides and at the back. PlayStation Support identifies those as the vent locations, but its guidance does not map airflow direction for each opening. Don’t assume a particular opening is an intake or exhaust.
Check that the space around both sides and the rear is open. Sony recommends at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console; this is placement guidance, not a performance guarantee. PlayStation Support’s PS5 noise guidance gives the clearance recommendation.
How to place the console without blocking airflow
- Avoid a narrow, cramped space, such as a tight cabinet or shelf.
- Don’t place the console on a carpet or rug with long fibres.
- Keep the vents clear and prevent dust from accumulating in or around them.
- Don’t cover the console with cloth, and don’t use it without its covers.

How to clean dust around the vents
- Turn off the console and disconnect the AC power cable from the rear before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum around the vents to remove dust.
- For dust underneath removed covers, the CFI-71XX safety guide recommends using a handheld vacuum. Follow the instructions for your specific PS5 revision; don’t assume cover-removal steps are identical across models.
- Refit the covers before using the console. Sony says not to operate it without them.
For exterior plastic, the safety guide recommends a soft, dry cloth. It warns against volatile substances such as paint thinner, benzene and alcohol. Don’t insert tools into the vents or use liquids to clean them.
Does a louder PS5 fan mean the vents are blocked?
Not necessarily. PlayStation Support says the cooling fan may operate louder than usual during some games and applications as it temporarily runs faster to cool the system. Noise alone does not establish a fault. Check that the console has the recommended clearance and that dust has not built up around the vents. If the noise concern persists, contact PlayStation Support rather than trying to diagnose the hardware from sound alone.
