Blizzard does not publish a complete, current city-by-city map of World of Warcraft server facilities. Public technical reports place the main Americas realms in Chicago and a western U.S. location historically identified as Los Angeles and more recently described by players as Las Vegas or the Los Angeles–Las Vegas area. Oceanic realms are widely associated with Sydney, Australia. Blizzard confirms Europe, Korea, and Taiwan as separate service regions, but its official status pages do not disclose their exact facility cities.
That answer is useful for estimating latency, but a realm is not one permanently assigned physical machine. Cross-realm zones, sharding, dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, matchmaking, and Battle.net services can use different infrastructure.
What does “WoW server” mean?
Players use “server” to describe several different systems:

- Connected realm: Multiple named realms linked so their populations can interact more closely.
- Realm infrastructure: The broader data-center and networking systems supporting a realm; it is not necessarily a single physical computer.
- Instance server: Systems that can host a dungeon, raid, battleground, or other temporary activity.
- Shard or cross-realm zone: A dynamically selected copy of a zone that may contain players from several realms.
- Battle.net services: Login, authentication, patch delivery, account, storefront, voice, and support systems that need not be colocated with the game world.
Consequently, your home realm can be associated with one regional infrastructure group while a particular dungeon or battleground follows another network path.

North American realm locations
Community technical discussions on Blizzard’s forums consistently identify Chicago and a western U.S. location as the principal publicly reported locations for U.S. realms. Older discussions call the western site Los Angeles; more recent player reports describe it as Las Vegas or a move within the Los Angeles–Las Vegas area. Blizzard has not published a current directory assigning every realm to a city, so those descriptions should be treated as broad regional evidence rather than a guaranteed facility map.
There is no reliable current evidence of a dedicated U.S. East Coast WoW facility. Players who move to a realm they consider “East Coast” can still be routed through Chicago, California, or another location. A 2026 Blizzard-forum report describes exactly that situation, with the player’s supposed East Coast realm still taking a California route (forum discussion).
For the eastern and central United States, Chicago is often the more plausible nearby region; western U.S. and western Canadian players may find the western location preferable. Your ISP’s peering and route can reverse those assumptions, however, so measure latency rather than choosing by reputation.

Oceanic realms are widely associated with Sydney, Australia, according to Blizzard-community technical discussions (server-ping discussion). Australia and New Zealand players will normally start with the Americas/Oceania realm grouping. Players in Southeast Asia should test both Oceanic and other available regional options: physical distance alone does not determine the best route, and ISP peering can make a less obvious choice faster.

Blizzard lists a Sydney corporate office, but an office address is not proof that game servers are housed there. The server-location evidence comes from the technical reports, not the office directory.
European, Korean, and Taiwanese realms
Blizzard’s official realm-status pages confirm separate regional groupings for Europe, Korea, and Taiwan, as well as Americas/Oceania. These pages show realm availability and status; they do not publish exact colocation facilities or city-by-city assignments.
Older community lists sometimes name Frankfurt, Paris, or other European cities. Without current first-party confirmation, those should not be presented as definitive. Korean realms should be described as served within the Korean service region, and Taiwanese realms within the Taiwan region, while their exact current facility cities remain undisclosed in the official material. Blizzard’s offices in Seoul and Taipei likewise do not establish game-server locations.

Mainland China should be considered separately because service operation and infrastructure arrangements can differ. Do not automatically fold China into the Americas, Europe, Korea, or Taiwan categories.

Realm names and clocks do not reveal server location
A realm name is not a geographic coordinate. The time zone shown by a realm is a configuration used for the in-game clock and scheduled activities; it does not prove that the machines are in that time zone. A realm displaying Pacific Time is not proof of a specific West Coast facility, and a realm players call “East Coast” does not prove an East Coast data center exists. Historical Blizzard-forum guidance also warns that observed IP addresses can represent gateways, load balancers, or address pools rather than an individual game server (connection-information discussion).
Does your home realm determine every server you use?
No. Your home realm matters for character identity, guilds, realm community, parts of the economy, and some world data. But modern WoW can move you between infrastructure groups:
- Open-world zones may use sharding and cross-realm technology.
- Dungeons and raids can run on instance systems separate from the home realm.
- Battlegrounds and group-finder activities use matchmaking infrastructure.
- Cross-realm groups can place players from different realms in the same activity.
The interface can show separate Home and World latency values. They can differ, and the route during a raid or battleground may not match the route while standing in a capital city. A high ping therefore does not, by itself, prove that your chosen realm is physically far away.
How to test which realm is best for you
- Open the realm-selection screen and choose candidates in the relevant regional grouping.
- Create a temporary character if you need to enter a realm before committing a main character.
- Enter the world and read the latency display in the lower-right area of the interface.
- Test several realms at approximately the same time of day, especially during your normal play hours.
- Repeat without a VPN and, if possible, over wired Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi.
- Record both ordinary open-world latency and latency in the activity that actually causes problems.
- Balance the result against population, guild availability, faction balance, economy, and queue conditions.
A one-time reading is not a permanent guarantee. Internet routes, ISP congestion, and peering change. If results vary sharply, use Blizzard’s current support instructions and, when appropriate, standard diagnostics such as:

traceroute <hostname-or-address> # macOS/LinuxDo not publish or rely on old hard-coded WoW IP lists as universal addresses. Endpoints can change, and traceroute identifies the path to an endpoint—not necessarily the physical machine running your current activity. ICMP filtering, VPNs, and temporary routing can also distort results.
Why your ping may not match the apparent server location
- ISP routing: Your provider may take an indirect path to Chicago, the western U.S., or Sydney.
- Peering congestion: A normally good route can slow during peak hours.
- VPNs: A VPN adds another intermediary and can move your traffic farther away.
- Local network conditions: Wi-Fi interference, uploads, downloads, and bufferbloat can raise latency.
- Activity placement: An instance or cross-realm activity may use infrastructure different from your home realm.
- Service health: The realm-status page reports realm availability, not the health of every login, account, patch, authentication, or instance service.
Check the official realm-status page alongside Blizzard’s launcher and support notices when status and experience disagree.
Bottom line
The most defensible public answer is that North American WoW realms are associated with Chicago and a western U.S. location historically called Los Angeles and more recently described as Las Vegas or the surrounding region; Oceanic realms are associated with Sydney. Europe, Korea, and Taiwan are confirmed service regions, but Blizzard does not publish a complete current city-by-city facility list. Choose a realm using measured in-game latency and your social and gameplay priorities—not a realm name, time-zone label, old IP list, or supposed “East Coast” designation.
