Endermen cannot teleport to a spot that fails the landing checks: the destination must provide a place to stand, must not be waterlogged, and needs enough clear space overhead. That means there is no universal list of blocks that are always teleport-proof. Carpet and shallow snow can block a landing in some vertical alignments, but not all.
What makes a destination invalid?
The Minecraft Wiki’s teleportation mechanics describe Endermen selecting a destination and checking for a viable landing area. A destination is rejected if it is waterlogged or if liquid or solid blocks prevent the Enderman from standing there. The Wiki also says at least three non-solid blocks of space must be available above the destination.
Think in terms of landing surface, fluid state, and overhead clearance—not simply a block’s name. A short block may affect the geometry, but that alone does not make every arrangement of that block a reliable barrier.
Do carpet and snow stop Endermen?
Sometimes, depending on the Enderman’s vertical alignment. The Wiki notes that teleport distance is an integer number of blocks vertically. A single carpet or shallow snow layers over a movement-blocking block can prevent a landing at some starting Y-coordinates. Deeper snow layers may still allow a landing at other coordinates.

So carpet and snow are conditional options, not guaranteed teleport-proofing. If you are protecting a particular spot, assess the whole landing area and its height rather than relying on one surface block.
What about water, waterlogged blocks, boats, and minecarts?
- Waterlogged destination blocks: The Minecraft Wiki lists these as invalid destinations.
- Other liquid or solid obstructions: These can make a landing area unsuitable if the Enderman cannot stand there.
- Boats and minecarts: The cited Wiki mechanics page says an Enderman cannot teleport while riding in one in Java Edition. This specific rule is not established here for Bedrock Edition.
The Wiki also describes failed or returning teleport attempts involving rain or water; that does not make every nearby location a dependable barrier.

How to apply this when protecting a spot
- Check the destination surface. Make sure the arrangement does not provide a valid place for the Enderman to stand.
- Check fluid state. A waterlogged destination block is described as invalid.
- Check overhead clearance. The Wiki’s stated requirement is at least three non-solid blocks above the destination.
- Treat carpet and snow as geometry-dependent. Their effect can change with vertical alignment, so do not assume a single layer always prevents teleportation.
- Account for edition and version. The vehicle restriction cited above is Java-specific, and the detailed mechanics source is community-maintained rather than a version-pinned official specification.
What Mojang says about Enderman teleporting
Mojang’s Minecraft Monstrous Compendium gives the broad behavior: “When an Enderman becomes the target of a ranged weapon or takes damage, it teleports to a safer location nearby and makes a distinctive ‘voop’ sound at its destination.” This describes why it teleports, but does not spell out the detailed destination checks.
The specific landing rules above come from the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki’s teleportation page. No exact game version is established for those details, so edge cases should not be assumed to be identical across every version.
