If the Epic Games Launcher is already installed, search for Epic Games Launcher in the Windows Start menu or open Finder → Applications on a Mac. If it is not installed, download the desktop version from Epic’s official download page.
Find the launcher on Windows
- Press the Windows key and type Epic Games Launcher, then open the app in the results.
- If it does not appear, check Start → All apps for Epic Games Launcher.
- Look near the clock in the notification area. The launcher may still be running in the system tray even if its window is closed.
- If needed, search File Explorer for
EpicGamesLauncher.exe. Its location varies: Epic allows a custom installation directory, so there is no single path that applies to every PC.
If you only downloaded the installer, check your Downloads folder for a file with a name like EpicInstaller-X.0.0. That file starts installation; it is not the installed launcher. After installation, search for the app itself.
Find the launcher on Mac
Open Finder → Applications and double-click Epic Games Launcher. Epic says Applications is the default location, but the app may have been moved. You can also press Command + Space, search for the launcher in Spotlight, or search for it in Finder. If it is in the Dock, click its icon.
Download it if it is missing
- Go to store.epicgames.com/en-US/download.
- Select the download option for the Windows or Mac launcher. Epic says the installer should download automatically; if it does not, use the platform-specific download button on the page.
- Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.
- When installation finishes, open Epic Games Launcher and sign in to your Epic account.
Use Epic’s official page rather than third-party download sites or ads that imitate Epic. The Epic Games Store is the storefront and account ecosystem; the Epic Games Launcher is the desktop app used to browse, download, update, and launch PC games. The same download page may also show mobile store apps, which are not the Windows or Mac launcher.

If you have lost the shortcut
A missing desktop icon does not necessarily mean the launcher was uninstalled. Use Windows search or Finder/Spotlight to open it. Once found, you can pin the app to the taskbar on Windows or add it to the Dock on Mac using the operating system’s shortcut or pinning options.
For a shortcut to an individual game, open Epic Games Launcher → Library, select the game’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, then choose Create beside Create Desktop Shortcut. If that option does not work, Epic’s shortcut instructions describe making one from the game’s installation folder. A game shortcut offers quick access, but it does not guarantee that the launcher, sign-in, updates, anti-cheat, or other game requirements can be bypassed.

Installed an Epic game but cannot find the launcher?
The game and launcher are separate. Epic games are managed through the launcher’s Library; having game files on your PC does not tell you where the launcher is or whether its shortcut still exists. Search for the launcher first. If you launch a game from its own shortcut, the game may still need Epic services or authentication.
Choose a different installation folder on Windows
Most people should use the normal installer. If you specifically need to choose the launcher’s installation directory, Epic documents this advanced Windows method:

- Download the latest installer.
- Right-click it and choose Copy as path.
- Open Command Prompt, paste the quoted installer path, add a space and
/installdir, then press Enter. The command takes this form:"PATH_TO_EPIC_INSTALLER.exe" /installdir. - Choose the installation location when the installer opens.
Follow Epic’s installation-directory instructions if you need the exact procedure. A custom location is also why searching for the executable is more reliable than assuming a universal folder.

If it still will not open
- Search for the app again and check the system tray or Dock; it may already be running.
- On Windows, fully exit the launcher from the system tray, then restart the PC and try again.
- Check whether your system meets Epic’s launcher requirements: Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, or macOS 13.5 or later; Epic also lists at least 4 GB memory and about 3 GB storage. Epic says beta versions of macOS are not supported. Its broader download page shows older Mac minimums, so use the newer launcher-specific support page for requirements.
- If Windows incorrectly reports that the operating system is unsupported, Epic suggests fully exiting the launcher, opening the executable’s Properties → Compatibility tab, and relaunching. Treat this as a troubleshooting workaround, not a guaranteed fix. See Epic’s Windows troubleshooting guidance.
- Reinstall only if locating or restarting the app does not help. Epic warns that uninstalling the launcher can remove locally installed games. You can download owned games again, but save recovery depends on whether each game supports cloud saves. Check relevant save data before uninstalling.
