ROG Ally screenshots and screen recordings made with the built-in capture controls normally go in C:Users<your-Windows-username>VideosCaptures. The quickest way to find a particular file is to select it in the capture gallery, press LB, then choose Open file location, as ASUS documents.
The default ROG Ally capture folder
For the original ROG Ally and ROG Ally X using the built-in Armoury Crate SE or Command Center capture controls, the normal Windows location is C:Users<your-Windows-username>VideosCaptures. In File Explorer, browse to Home > Videos > Captures. Xbox Game Bar screenshots are generally PNG files, and recordings are generally MP4 files, according to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar guidance.
ASUS’s current support FAQ uses Captures; an older ROG guide uses the singular Capture. For the current standard path, use VideosCaptures. If a folder is missing or a library has been moved, the file’s own Open file location command is more reliable than assuming a fixed disk path.
Open a capture’s folder from the Ally
- Open the capture list or gallery and highlight the screenshot or recording.
- Press the left bumper (LB).
- Select Open file location. File Explorer should open at the selected file’s actual location.
This is the best way to verify where a specific capture was saved, including when the Windows Videos folder has been redirected. Gallery labels and presentation can vary with Armoury Crate SE and Xbox Game Bar versions.

Find captures manually in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Home or your Windows user folder, then open Videos and Captures.
- Alternatively, paste
%USERPROFILE%VideosCapturesinto File Explorer’s address bar and press Enter.
The address-bar shortcut uses the current Windows account’s profile path, so you do not need to substitute your username. If you use more than one Windows account, check that you are signed into the account that took the capture.
How the Ally takes screenshots and recordings
Armoury Crate SE supplies handheld controls and may show or share media, but the standard built-in capture workflow relies on Xbox Game Bar and Windows for the files. ASUS’s ROG capture guide describes Command Center actions and configurable rear-button combinations, while directing users to Windows for file handling.
- Command Center: use Take Screenshot or Record Screen, if those actions are present.
- Rear-button shortcuts: combinations such as M1/M2 + A for a screenshot or M1/M2 + Y for recording may be configured; mappings can be changed or disabled.
- Configure Command Center: open Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Edit Command Center and add a missing action if it is available.
Microsoft lists these default Xbox Game Bar keyboard shortcuts: Windows + G opens Game Bar, Windows + Alt + Print Screen takes a screenshot, Windows + Alt + R starts or stops recording, and Windows + Alt + M toggles the microphone during recording. The Ally’s physical controls can invoke capture functions without a physical Windows or Print Screen key.

If the Captures folder is empty or missing
The folder does not have to exist before the first successful Game Bar capture. If you cannot find a file, work through these checks:
- Use a capture you can see. Select it in the gallery and choose LB > Open file location. That reveals the actual path for that file.
- Check the expected folder. Open
%USERPROFILE%VideosCapturesand confirm you are using the Windows account that took the capture. - Check the capture source. Steam, AMD Software, OBS, a game’s own screenshot feature, or Snipping Tool may save elsewhere. See the next section.
- Check the Windows Videos location. If Videos is redirected to OneDrive or another drive, the physical folder may not be under the conventional profile path.
- Check Game Bar and its settings. ASUS says the Ally’s built-in capture controls rely on Xbox Game Bar. Confirm it is installed and enabled; Windows capture-related options are under Settings > Gaming > Captures, though controls can differ by Windows build.
- Try a new test capture. If it does not appear or save, the app being captured may be unsupported, Game Bar may be unavailable, or the capture may have failed. A file may also have been moved or deleted after it was made.
If Command Center lacks the capture button, add it through Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Edit Command Center. Check the current button mapping rather than assuming a rear-button shortcut is still active. A file can exist in Windows even if Armoury Crate’s media view does not show it; the gallery is not a universal browser for captures made by every app.

“ROG Ally screenshot” can mean a file created by different software. The app that actually took the capture determines where to look; the alternative locations below are not universal because many apps let users change them.

| Capture method | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Armoury Crate SE or Command Center built-in capture | Normally Windows Game Bar’s VideosCaptures folder |
| Xbox Game Bar keyboard or controller shortcut | Normally VideosCaptures |
| Steam | Steam’s screenshot library and Steam-specific folders |
| AMD Software | The media location configured in AMD Software |
| OBS Studio | The recording or screenshot paths configured in OBS |
| Game-native screenshot tool | The game’s own screenshot folder or launcher library |
| Windows Snipping Tool | The save flow and location selected in Snipping Tool |
If you want to capture the Windows desktop and Game Bar’s normal shortcut does not work, use a suitable alternative such as Snipping Tool, Steam’s overlay, AMD Software, or OBS. Those tools do not necessarily save to the Game Bar folder.
Can you change where captures are saved?
The location can differ if the Windows Videos folder has been moved, redirected, or synchronized with OneDrive. Windows also provides capture-related options under Settings > Gaming > Captures, but the available controls depend on the Windows and Game Bar versions; do not assume Armoury Crate has its own independent folder selector. Use Open file location to verify where a capture actually went. Before changing a Windows library location, back up files and confirm they open from the backup.
These Armoury Crate SE and Game Bar directions apply to the original ROG Ally and ROG Ally X workflow. Newer ROG Xbox Ally models may have different Xbox-focused controls, so their interface should not be assumed to match every original Ally.
