In current Terraria, the Compass is an enemy drop, not a chest or crafted item. Several enemies can drop it, each with a fixed per-attempt chance, and Mimics are no longer one of the sources. The Compass is mainly useful as an ingredient in the GPS.
Which enemies drop a Compass
The Official Terraria Wiki lists the following sources for the shared Desktop, Console, and Mobile versions. The percentages are drop chances per eligible drop attempt. They do not guarantee a Compass after a set number of kills.

Choosing a farm
The highest listed rate is 2%, shared by Mother Slimes, Snow Flinx, Undead Vikings, and Armored Vikings. Crawdads, Giant Shellies, and Salamanders are the lowest of the common sources at 1.23%. Pick the enemy you can farm most comfortably at your current progression, because at these rates the difference between sources matters less than how many kills you can run per hour. Statue spawns are a notable exception: the reduced odds for Piranha Statue and Undead Viking Statue spawns mean that statue-spawned enemies are a poor choice for Compass farming.
Why older Mimic advice is out of date
Many older guides list Mimics as a Compass source. The Official Terraria Wiki’s item history records that Mimics stopped being a Compass source in Desktop 1.3.0.1, so they should not be used for farming today.

What the Compass does
The Compass shows your horizontal position. It works from your inventory, from a Void Bag, or from a social accessory slot, so you do not need to keep it in your main inventory to use the readout. In multiplayer, the readout is shared with same-team players within 50 tiles, according to the item page.
The Compass is also a crafting ingredient. The GPS is made at a Tinkerer’s Workshop from a Compass, a Depth Meter, and either a Gold Watch or a Platinum Watch.

Version and platform notes
The main drop information applies to Desktop, Console, and Mobile. Old-gen console and 3DS versions have separate legacy information on the wiki, so check that page if you play on those systems.
The Desktop history records two changes to the four Mother Slime and Viking sources. Desktop 1.4.5.0 cut their chance from 1/50 to 1/100, and Desktop 1.4.5.7 restored it to 1/50. If you are following a guide written between those versions, its numbers may not match the current game.
