For a CurseForge Minecraft Java world, open the correct profile’s files and look in saves/<world folder>. CurseForge does not document one universal folder for automatic world backups: the backup’s location depends on what created it.
Where CurseForge saves a Minecraft world
Each CurseForge profile or instance has its own files, so start with the profile where you played the world. In that profile, open saves; the world is stored in a folder inside it. CurseForge’s Java-world guidance describes this profile-specific location.
- In the CurseForge app, open Minecraft settings and check the configured modding-folder location. CurseForge’s folder-location instructions explain the default roots and that the location can be changed.
- Open the relevant profile or instance’s local files.
- Open
saves, then find the folder named for your world.
The documented default modding-folder roots are:
- Windows:
C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft - macOS:
/Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/ - Linux:
/home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft
These are starting points, not guaranteed locations: your CurseForge installation may use a custom modding folder, and profile folder names vary.
Why a backup may be somewhere else
The world in saves is the active save location, not necessarily a separate backup. CurseForge’s official documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal path for automatic world backups or a single app-wide restore procedure. A backup could have been made by a mod, another launcher or game feature, or by manually copying the world folder. Check the instructions for the feature that created it.

A CurseForge profile export is also not the same thing as an automatic world backup. The profile-export instructions cover sharing a modpack profile and whether worlds are included; they do not identify a universal automatic-backup folder.

If the world is missing
- Check the configured CurseForge modding folder rather than assuming the default location.
- Open the profile where the world was played. Looking only in another profile’s
savesfolder can make a world appear missing. - If you played the world in Minecraft’s vanilla launcher, check its saves location instead:
%appdata%.minecraftsaveson Windows or~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves/on macOS. These are vanilla locations, not substitutes for a CurseForge profile’s saves folder. - If you are restoring or moving a save, make a separate copy of the world folder first. An external drive can hold that manual copy, but it is optional.
