There is no single Minecraft Launcher folder in Windows 11. The correct location depends on whether you need Java Edition data, Bedrock Edition data, or the Launcher program itself.

For most Java players, press Windows + R, enter %AppData%.minecraft, and press Enter. If you use Bedrock, modded profiles, or a custom Java installation, use the corresponding instructions below.
Open the default Java Edition folder
The usual Java Edition data directory is:
%AppData%.minecraft
- Press Windows + R.
- Paste
%AppData%.minecraft. - Press Enter.
This environment-variable shortcut works even though the AppData folder is hidden by default. It opens the folder for the currently signed-in Windows user, not a shared system-wide location.

These folders are typical rather than guaranteed. A custom installation, modpack launcher, or different game version may use another directory.

Find the folder for a specific Java installation
%AppData%.minecraft is only the default. Each Java profile can use a separate Game Directory, including a folder on another drive.
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations.
- Select the relevant installation.
- Choose Edit or open its installation details.
- Check the Game Directory field.
- Use the folder icon, if shown, to open that location in File Explorer.
This is especially important for Forge, Fabric, modpacks, and profiles deliberately separated from the default .minecraft folder. Minecraft’s official Java storage guidance also points users to the Java installation list and folder icon when locating installation-related files.
Open the traditional Bedrock Edition folder
For Minecraft for Windows, the commonly used Bedrock data path is:

To open it, press Windows + R, paste the path, and press Enter.

The traditional world folder is:
%LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalStategamescom.mojangminecraftWorlds
This is a widely used historical Store-package location, but it is not a guarantee for every current Windows installation. Bedrock storage has changed as Microsoft and Xbox services have evolved, and some installations may store data differently or leave the traditional folder incomplete. Microsoft community guidance documents the path, but it should be treated as a common location rather than a definitive current storage specification.
If the folder is missing, launch Bedrock once, confirm that you are using the same Windows account that played the game, and check whether your installation uses a newer storage arrangement. Export important worlds from inside Minecraft where possible before changing files.
Find the actual Minecraft Launcher program
The Launcher application is different from the folder containing your worlds and mods.
For a Microsoft Store installation, Windows normally stores the packaged application below:

The precise package folder includes a versioned package name and can change after updates. Microsoft documents the general format as WindowsApps<package_full_name> for packaged desktop apps.

Commands such as takeown and icacls are not normal Minecraft troubleshooting steps and can interfere with Store app servicing and security.
Some direct or older installer deployments may use a path resembling:
C:Program Files (x86)Minecraft Launcher
That path is not universal. Minecraft distributes the Launcher through both the Microsoft Store and Minecraft.net, so the installation source affects the layout.
Repair the Launcher without opening WindowsApps
If your goal is to fix the Launcher rather than access game files, use Windows app management:

- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Minecraft Launcher.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Choose Repair first.
- Use Reset only if Repair does not solve the problem.
Repair and reset maintain the packaged app more safely than manually modifying its installation directory. Minecraft’s Launcher update troubleshooting and crash troubleshooting recommend Windows app-management and related Store/Xbox service checks for these problems.
Which folder should contain your files?

If the folder does not exist
Java folder missing
- Launch Java Edition once, then check again.
- Open Java Edition > Installations and inspect the Game Directory.
- Check that you are signed into the Windows user profile that runs Minecraft.
- Search File Explorer for a known world name,
launcher_profiles, or asavesfolder. - Check whether a third-party launcher or modpack manager uses its own directory.
Bedrock folder missing
- Launch Minecraft for Windows once.
- Confirm that Bedrock, rather than Java Edition, is installed and being launched.
- Check the Windows account and the Store/Xbox account used for the game.
- Recognize that newer Bedrock storage may not match the traditional package path.
- Do not delete or replace package folders while trying to locate worlds.
Several Minecraft folders exist
This is normal. You may have Java’s default .minecraft, separate custom Game Directories, Bedrock app data, Store package files, Launcher caches, and third-party launcher directories. The correct folder is determined by the edition and the active installation profile—not simply by the word “Minecraft” in the folder name.
Back up before changing Minecraft files
Before moving, replacing, or deleting anything, make an independent backup. For Java, copy the entire active installation folder or at least its saves directory. For Bedrock, export worlds from inside Minecraft where possible and retain the exported files separately.
Do not assume that uninstalling or reinstalling the Launcher will preserve every local world, setting, or custom profile. Storage behavior depends on the edition, account, and installation model. The Launcher’s application package is also not the same thing as your game data.
For licensing or access problems, make sure the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Launcher are using the account associated with the game. Minecraft’s license-error guidance covers that relationship.

Edition names to remember
Minecraft: Java Edition normally uses .minecraft or the custom Game Directory shown in the Launcher. It is the edition associated with Forge, Fabric, Java profiles, and many mod installations.
Minecraft for Windows is Bedrock Edition. Its files are managed through Store/Xbox-style app storage and may not follow Java’s folder structure or the traditional Bedrock path on every current installation.
The Launcher is the tool used to download, manage, update, and start these editions; it is not itself the location where all worlds, mods, and screenshots are stored. Minecraft’s edition and purchase guidance explains the distinction between Java Edition and Minecraft for Windows.

Where are Java Edition worlds stored in Windows 11?
Usually in %AppData%.minecraftsaves. If the active Java installation has a custom Game Directory, its saves folder is the correct location instead.
Why can’t I open the WindowsApps folder?
Windows protects Microsoft Store app packages. You normally do not need to open it to access Minecraft worlds or mods, and changing its permissions can damage app servicing.
Where are Minecraft mods installed?
For Java, place compatible mods in the mods folder of the active installation’s Game Directory. Bedrock add-ons use a different system and should not be placed in Java’s mods folder.
Does the Minecraft folder change between Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The Java shortcut is generally the same, but Store packaging and Bedrock storage can change with the app and Windows version. Use the active Launcher installation and edition-specific paths rather than assuming one universal location.
What if the Bedrock minecraftWorlds folder is missing?
Launch Bedrock once, verify the Windows account, and treat the traditional package path as only a starting point. Current Bedrock storage may use a different or managed location; export worlds from the game where possible.
