During Chasing Echoes, the back entrance to Castle Volkihar is on the northern (left) shoreline beside an old supply inlet. Follow the coast from the bridge to a U-shaped jetty, climb its steps, and enter Volkihar Undercroft. This route takes you to the courtyard; it is not the main gate at the end of the bridge.
How to find the entrance to Volkihar Undercroft
-
Begin Chasing Echoes and speak with Serana about searching Castle Volkihar for her mother, Valerica. Serana points you toward a back way into the courtyard. The route is described in Prima Games’ Chasing Echoes guide.
-
Return to the castle exterior. Use the jetty watchtower and bridge as landmarks, then take the northern, or left, side of the bridge and follow the rugged coast toward an unused inlet.
-
At the inlet, climb onto the U-shaped old supply jetty and go up the steps to the door marked Volkihar Undercroft. The shoreline approach is also shown in GameFAQs’ Skyrim walkthrough and TrueAchievements’ walkthrough.

Travel through the Undercroft to reach the courtyard. If you are continuing the quest, find the three missing moon crests and place them in the courtyard moondial to expose the stairs to Volkihar Ruins. Prima’s Volkihar Courtyard atlas identifies this later route.
Which Castle Volkihar entrance do you mean?
There are two concealed routes at different stages of Chasing Echoes. The shoreline door enters Volkihar Undercroft, which leads to the courtyard. The staircase revealed by repairing the moondial leads onward from the courtyard into Volkihar Ruins. If you are trying to get inside the castle from outside, look for the inlet and jetty; the moondial stairs come later.
