itch.io is the clearest documented alternative to GOG for DRM-free PC games. Its official FAQs say most releases include DRM-free builds and that itch.io does not impose DRM on uploaded files. Humble Store is worth checking game by game; ZOOM Platform is a less-certain lead for older PC games. None of those facts makes every game on a mixed marketplace DRM-free, so verify the specific download before buying.

GOG is a useful reference point: it describes itself as a digital distribution platform with a curated selection of DRM-free games and an optional gaming client. Other storefronts need not follow the same policy.
Why itch.io is the strongest starting point
itch.io’s official documentation distinguishes the platform’s handling of files from the choices made by each creator. The Creator FAQ says, “itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them. No modifications are made to the files you upload.” Its buyer FAQ says most releases include DRM-free builds, sometimes alongside extra keys when the game is also available on Steam.
That makes itch.io a well-supported place to look, especially if you are browsing independent releases. It does not mean every listing has the same files, installer, or distribution arrangement. Read the project page rather than assuming that an itch.io purchase always means a particular download format.

How to verify a game before you pay
- Open the exact game listing. A store’s general policy or a community list cannot establish what files come with an individual title.
- Look for a direct downloadable build. Check whether the description identifies game files or an installer you can download, rather than only a third-party platform key.
- Check the DRM wording. Prefer an explicit statement about DRM-free files. If the page is unclear, do not infer DRM-free status from the storefront name.
- Check how updates are delivered. If keeping a downloadable copy current matters to you, look for the creator’s or store’s explanation of updates and available files.
itch.io’s Creator FAQ says creators are not required to make DRM-free uploads, though it notes that buyers want access to files on itch.io and that DRM-free uploads are preferred. That is another reason to inspect the specific listing.
How much do the catalog counts prove?
PCGamingWiki’s broad DRM-free list showed 2,296 itch.io games and 1,264 Humble Store games in its October 3, 2026 snapshot. These are community-maintained index counts, not official storefront catalog totals, and can change. They indicate that the index lists titles for those stores; they do not show that every game in either store is DRM-free.

Use an index to discover candidates, then verify the product page and download details. A large count alone cannot tell you whether the specific game you want includes a direct DRM-free build.

How to choose where to browse
- Start with itch.io when you want a marketplace whose official documentation supports DRM-free downloads as a common feature, while still checking each creator’s files.
- Use Humble Store selectively when the particular game is listed as DRM-free and its product page confirms what you will receive.
- Try ZOOM Platform for older titles only as a discovery lead; verify the listing because a store-wide DRM policy is not established here.
- Compare the games, not just the stores. Genre and era coverage, direct file availability, clarity about DRM, and update delivery are more useful than catalog size by itself.
