The itch.io and Humble figures are third-party index snapshots, not audited or official store totals, and can change. Treat them as a rough indication of listed catalog breadth—not proof that any particular game is currently available DRM-free.
What “DRM-free” does—and does not—promise
DRM-free describes the absence of technical restrictions such as copy protection or required activation that control access to a game. It does not mean every part of the game works offline. Multiplayer, friends lists, leaderboards, cloud services, or other connected features may still need an internet connection or account authentication.
GOG’s developer documentation describes its standard this way: “GOG’s ‘DRM-Free’ philosophy means that games released on GOG can’t have any DRM/copy protection and should work in all possible scenarios, regardless of the result of GOG GALAXY authentication, GOG GALAXY client presence or Internet connection availability.” The qualification matters: GOG’s terms recognize multiplayer exceptions, and connected features are not made offline merely by a DRM-free release.

GOG separately stated in its 2022 update: “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” GOG, “GOG 2022 update #2: our commitment to DRM-free gaming”.
How to check a game before you pay
- Read the purchase format. Look for an actual DRM-free download or installer. A Steam key or other third-party platform key is not the same thing as a standalone download.
- Check launch and offline requirements. Find out whether single-player starts without the store client, account sign-in, or an online activation check.
- Identify connected features. Check multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, timed events, and other services separately; these may require a connection even when the game itself is DRM-free.
- Check long-term usability. Confirm operating-system compatibility, patch and DLC access, language availability, and whether you can retain an installer or backup copy.
For GOG purchases, the company describes downloading games for backup and reinstalling them. Keeping a copy of an available offline installer can help preserve access; it is optional and does not require buying additional hardware. GOG’s 2022 update.

- Choose GOG when you want a store-wide DRM-free standard. Then check the particular game for online features, compatibility, and any stated distribution-form exception.
- Choose itch.io when a specific game’s page confirms the download and its requirements. The indexed catalog count indicates that DRM-free titles are available, not that every itch.io game has the same terms.
- Choose Humble Store when the listing clearly identifies what you receive. Distinguish a DRM-free download from a Steam key, and check whether both are included.
- For Steam or another store, verify the exact store version. Do not infer a DRM policy from the game’s availability elsewhere.
