Each bearing unlocks two consecutive tiers: Bell Bearing [1] unlocks [1] and [2], [2] unlocks [3] and [4], [3] unlocks [5] and [6], and [4] unlocks [7] and [8].
This is the base-game route. Somber Smithing Stones for special and unique weapons use a different system and are not interchangeable with regular stones.

There are four regular Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearings in the base game. Bell Bearing [4] is the latest and most demanding unlock because it is tied to the Godskin Duo in Crumbling Farum Azula.
How to make the stones appear in the shop
- Reach Roundtable Hold and speak to the Twin Maiden Husks.
- Collect a Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing from the relevant location above.
- Choose the option to give the bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks.
- Open the shop’s buy menu. The newly unlocked tiers remain available for unlimited purchases, provided you have enough runes.
The bell bearing must be handed to the Twin Maiden Husks; merely carrying it does not add the stones to the inventory.

Where to find stones before unlocking the shop
Before you obtain a bearing, stones come from finite pickups, mining deposits, and occasional enemy drops. These are representative locations rather than a complete list of every pickup.
Smithing Stone [1]
- Limgrave Tunnels has multiple yellow ore deposits.
- Other early pickups include Church of Elleh, Gatefront, and Stormveil Castle.
Smithing Stone [2]
- Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel contains five listed tier-2 pickups.
- Additional early examples are in Limgrave, Stormveil, and Liurnia.
Smithing Stone [3]
- Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel contains ten listed tier-3 pickups.
- Other examples include Stormveil, Ravine-Veiled Village, South Raya Lucaria Gate, and Caria Manor.
Smithing Stone [4]
- Examples include Gael Tunnel, Sellia Crystal Tunnel, Ravine-Veiled Village, Siofra River Well Depths, Lakeside Crystal Cave, and Leyndell.
Smithing Stone [5]
- Sellia Crystal Tunnel, Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel, and the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
- The Liurnia ravine and areas around Altus and Leyndell also provide pickups.
Smithing Stone [6]
- Examples include Leyndell, Redmane Castle, and Mt. Gelmir.
- The Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast at Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite drops five.
Smithing Stone [7]
- The Fallingstar Beast at the end of Sellia Crystal Tunnel drops five.
Smithing Stone [8]
- Crumbling Farum Azula has a pickup close to the arrival area and many more throughout the zone.
How many regular stones a weapon needs
A normal weapon requires twelve stones of each regular tier to progress through the regular upgrade path to +24. The final +25 upgrade requires one Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

There is no regular Smithing Stone [9]. Players sometimes use “stone 9” as shorthand for the final material, but the actual item is an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are not unlocked by any bell bearing and cannot be bought from the Twin Maiden Husks. They are finite quest rewards and fixed late-game loot. Documented examples include rewards connected with Nepheli in Stormveil Castle, Gatekeeper Gostoc after related questlines, the Jerren outcome of Sellen’s quest, Gurranq after delivering Deathroot, the Church of Repose area, and late-game zones.

Because these stones are limited, spend them on the normal weapon you intend to keep at +25 rather than treating them like the infinitely purchasable [1]-[8] materials.

Regular and Somber Smithing Stones are different
Regular Smithing Stones upgrade ordinary weapons through the standard path to +25. Somber Smithing Stones upgrade special or unique weapons and follow their own tiering and availability. A Somber stone cannot replace a regular stone, and obtaining a regular bell bearing does not unlock Somber stones.
