Glacierfish is caught in the river in Cindersap Forest, off the southern tip of Arrowhead Island. Under the standard method it is a Winter fish, and you need fishing level 6, a specific standing tile and a bobber that lands well away from shore. Magic Bait is the one way to catch it outside Winter.
What you need before you cast
- Location: the river in Cindersap Forest, off the southern end of Arrowhead Island.
- Season: Winter, unless you are using Magic Bait.
- Fishing level: 6. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Glacierfish entry notes that fishing buffs can count toward this level.
- Standing tile: the single tile at the island’s southernmost tip.
- Bobber distance: the bobber must land at least three tiles from land in every direction.
Time of day and weather do not restrict the standard catch, so you do not need to wait for a particular forecast or hour once the season and level are right.

Step by step at the river
- Travel to Cindersap Forest and find Arrowhead Island in the river.
- Walk to the southernmost tip of the island and stand on the one tile that the wiki identifies for this catch.
- Cast so the bobber lands at least three tiles from land in every direction. Keep the bobber clear of the shoreline on all sides, not only the side facing you.
- If the bobber lands in bubbles, the Glacierfish can appear one tile closer to land. In that case the minimum distance effectively drops to two tiles.
- Hook the fish. Each cast that meets every condition above has a 50% chance to hook it.
What the fight is like
The Glacierfish entry gives it a difficulty value of 100 and a mixed movement pattern, so expect it to change direction and speed during the fight rather than run in a single steady line. The 50% hook chance is the Stardew Valley Wiki’s listed figure for a qualifying cast. It is game reference data, not a measured sample from players, so treat it as the expected rate per attempt rather than a guarantee.
Glacierfish and Glacierfish Jr. are different fish
Glacierfish Jr. is a separate fish, not an alternate name for the original. Players often confuse the two because they share a general location, but their seasons and fishing levels differ.

When you look up requirements, make sure the level and season you read belong to the fish you are targeting.
Magic Bait and the season
Magic Bait lets you catch Glacierfish in any season. The standard route is Winter-only, so Magic Bait is the practical option if you want the fish outside the cold months. The other requirements, including fishing level 6, the standing tile and the three-tile bobber distance, still apply.

Catching more than one Glacierfish
Glacierfish is normally catchable once per save file. In multiplayer, the limit is once per player. Since version 1.6, two methods can produce additional Glacierfish per player: Challenge Bait, and panning on the correct tiles while holding the Fisher enchantment. The wiki’s version history for this fish runs through version 1.6.15.
Troubleshooting when the fish does not appear
- It is not Winter and you have no Magic Bait: the standard catch will not appear in other seasons. Wait for Winter or use Magic Bait.
- Your fishing level is below 6: check your current level. Fishing buffs count toward the requirement, according to the wiki.
- The bobber is too close to shore: recast so it lands at least three tiles from land in every direction. Bubbles reduce this to two tiles.
- You are on the wrong tile: the catch is tied to the single southernmost tip of Arrowhead Island, not to any spot along the river bank.
- You already caught one: the standard catch is limited to one per save file or per player in multiplayer. Challenge Bait or Fisher-enchanted panning are the documented exceptions.
Version and source notes
These mechanics are taken from the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Glacierfish entry, cross-checked against its winter fish list, fish index, Glacierfish Jr. entry and Cindersap Forest page. The wiki’s version history for this fish runs through version 1.6.15. If a later game update changes fishing data, the location, level, season or catch chance may differ, so check the current wiki entry after a major patch.
