It depends on which ship you mean. To find a Sentinel Interceptor, search a dissonant system for a corrupted planet, then use a harmonic camp to locate a crashed ship. To find an exotic—including ball- or squid-shaped designs—wait for NPC ships at a space station or trading outpost, or travel to a system where players have shared the design’s location. Neither route comes with a guaranteed wait time.
First, identify the kind of rare ship you want
“Rare starship” is not one acquisition category in No Man’s Sky. Exotics arrive as NPC traffic; Sentinel Interceptors are wrecks you find and repair. Other unusual ships have their own routes.
| Ship type | How you acquire it | Can you target a specific design? |
|---|---|---|
| Exotic | Wait for NPC arrivals at a space station or trading outpost. | Community-shared system coordinates can direct you to a known design; random arrivals have no established guaranteed wait time. Community ship reference |
| Sentinel Interceptor | Find a crash site on a corrupted planet in a dissonant system, then repair and claim the wreck. | A harmonic camp can mark a crashed Interceptor in the system. Hello Games’ Interceptor update confirms corrupted worlds have crashed Interceptors. |
| Solar ship | Look for arrivals in outlaw systems, according to current community guidance. | Not stated in the cited community guide. Community guide |
| Living ship | Quest-gated. | Not stated in the cited community guide. Community guide |
| Corvette | Assembled from salvage, according to the cited community guide. | Not stated in the cited community guide. Community guide |
The table’s alternative ship routes are summarized in a community guide; Hello Games’ update is the primary source for the Interceptor location clue. These categories are not interchangeable: waiting for station traffic will not reveal a crashed Interceptor, and a crash-site hunt is not how you target an arriving exotic.
How to find a crashed Sentinel Interceptor
Hello Games describes corrupted planets as places to explore for “crashed interceptors.” Its Interceptor update calls them “purple-hazed worlds.” Community guides detail the following search route:

- Open the galaxy map and look for a Dissonant system. Check its planets for a corrupted world.
- Land on the corrupted planet and find a harmonic camp.
- Unlock the camp terminal and use it to mark a crashed Interceptor.
- Follow the dissonance-spike marker to the wreck, then repair and claim the ship.
The current community guide lists 3 Radiant Shards, 1 Inverted Mirror, and a Harmonic Brain as repair requirements. Check the in-game prompts when you reach the wreck, since an update can change a recipe. The guide also describes alternate ways to reveal a crash location: defeat the fifth wave of corrupted Sentinel patrols or use a Carrier AI Fragment. These are community-documented options, not steps specified in Hello Games’ update. Community Interceptor guide
How to find an exotic ship
Exotics—including familiar ball and squid silhouettes—arrive with ordinary NPC ship traffic. Wait at a space station or trading outpost and watch incoming ships. If you want a particular appearance, use community-shared coordinates to travel to a system associated with that design. Community exotic-ship reference

Community references describe the ships available in a system as a fixed pool, but the reviewed sources do not establish how many visits or how long a wait will produce a particular exotic. Hello Games has not published an exotic encounter percentage in the sources cited here, so treat any precise exotic spawn-rate claim as unverified.
Does economy or reloading help?
Economy and save-reload advice is for hunting higher-class arrivals generally; it does not guarantee an exotic. The NMS Wiki Team’s 2026 community guide reports the following S-class arrival odds, based on community documentation and testing rather than an official Hello Games rate:

| Average economy | About 1% |
| Pirate system | About 5% |
For general S-class hunting, that guide recommends using an economy scanner, choosing a wealthy or pirate system, saving at a trading post, and reloading to reroll arrivals. These percentages concern S-class arrivals overall—not a guarantee that an exotic will appear. NMS Wiki Team, 2026 community guide

- Want a distinctive exotic look? Wait for station or outpost traffic, or target a design through shared system coordinates.
- Want a Sentinel ship? Search a dissonant system’s corrupted planet and follow the harmonic-camp route to a wreck.
- Want another unusual ship family? Solar ships are associated with outlaw-system arrivals in community guidance; living ships require a quest, and corvettes are assembled from salvage.
- Hunting S-class arrivals generally? Use the economy and reload approach as a community-reported method, while keeping its odds separate from exotic encounter chances.
Community sources describe exotics as all-round trophy ships and Interceptors as crashed craft often valued for combat, but the cited material does not provide a controlled performance comparison. Choose by the acquisition route and design you want rather than assuming one is objectively better.
