Start with KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX, then follow the story route through Re:Chain of Memories, KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX, and Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX. Continue with Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 Birth by Sleep, and KINGDOM HEARTS III. This is a beginner-friendly narrative order, not an order mandated by Square Enix.
Recommended Kingdom Hearts order for a first playthrough
- KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX
- Re:Chain of Memories
- KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX
- Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep
- KINGDOM HEARTS III
The games form an action role-playing series developed and published by Square Enix in collaboration with Disney, under Tetsuya Nomura’s direction. The central story follows Sora, who travels through Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy to fight the Heartless, but the plot also unfolds through games and cinematic compilations between the numbered entries. Square Enix’s series overview provides the franchise premise.
Square Enix documents the titles and collections but does not prescribe one definitive play order. The sequence above is a practical route through the major story entries for newcomers: begin at the first game, continue through the key follow-ups, then play the lead-in material before III.
Which collection should you buy?
If you want to try the series before committing to everything, start with KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX. Square Enix describes it as containing the first six stories, including both full games and HD cutscene compilations. If you want all of the listed games and story presentations in one purchase, the KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] combines 1.5+2.5, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and III + Re Mind. Square Enix’s collection page lists the bundle and its product options.

What is playable, and what should you watch?
In 1.5+2.5, the entries for 358/2 Days and Re:coded are HD cutscene compilations rather than full playable games in that collection. In 2.8, χ Back Cover is a movie. The route’s playable story entries are the named games; the cinematic presentations add context if you want a fuller account.

The publisher lists physical editions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation, and says the physical collection requires an internet connection to download additional data. If you have limited connectivity, confirm that requirement is workable before choosing the physical edition. Earlier individual Nintendo Switch editions were cloud versions, so check the exact title and edition in the store rather than assuming every Switch listing runs locally. Square Enix also lists digital products for Steam and the Epic Games Store; the series launched on Steam on June 13, 2024, according to its Steam announcement.
There is a launch-date discrepancy to keep in mind near release: a PlayStation Store listing showed October 6, 2026, while Square Enix’s announcement gives October 8. The publisher-wide announced date is October 8; verify your local storefront immediately before purchase. A US preorder price of $74.99 was shown on that PlayStation listing at the time it was checked, but it is not a universal or stable price.
