South Korean athletes who win Asian Games gold can qualify for military-service assignment as arts and sports personnel. In a team event, an athlete must have actually participated; silver or bronze alone does not qualify. The medal does not automatically erase military-service obligations: an application, ministerial recommendation and formal assignment are part of the process.
Which Asian Games results qualify?
Article 68-11 of South Korea’s Enforcement Decree of the Military Service Act lists first place at the Asian Games as a qualifying sports achievement. That means gold; an Asian Games silver or bronze medal by itself does not meet the criterion. The government’s legal guidance also identifies first place at the Asian Games as the threshold.

The decree specifies that an athlete in a team competition must have actually participated in the competition. A team’s gold medal is therefore not, by itself, enough to establish that every person associated with that team qualifies.
How does the assignment work?
“Military-service exemption” is common shorthand, but the formal mechanism is assignment as arts and sports personnel, an alternative service classification. A qualifying result does not automatically discharge every military-service obligation.

- A person who meets a listed achievement criterion and seeks arts and sports personnel service submits an application to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, with supporting evidence such as proof of the competition result.
- The minister is to notify the Commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration of the recommended list within 14 days after receiving the application.
- The Commissioner assigns eligible people to serve in fields designated by the Military Manpower Administration.
Government legal guidance describes the eligible pool as people subject to active-duty enlistment or supplemental service call-up who are recommended by the minister. The result establishes eligibility to seek assignment; the administrative process determines assignment.

These are distinct thresholds: an Olympic bronze can meet the listed result criterion, while an Asian Games bronze or silver cannot.
What do recent examples show?
Tom Kim’s 2026 Asian Games gold
The Associated Press reported on October 3, 2026, that South Korean golfer Tom Kim (Kim Joo-hyung) won men’s singles gold at the 2026 Asian Games and received the benefit. The report said South Korea’s golf team did not win its team event and teammate S.H. Kim did not receive the benefit through that team result. These examples illustrate the distinction between an individual gold and a team result; the decree remains the authority for the eligibility test. Tom Kim said after his win: “Despite that, I’m more proud that I’m able to bring a medal for my country.” (Associated Press report)
South Korea’s League of Legends team
The Associated Press reported that members of South Korea’s League of Legends team received the benefit after winning gold at the 2022 Asian Games. Lee Sang-hyeok, known as “Faker,” had played in earlier games but missed the final and was included. That is a reported example of team participation; the decree states the enforceable criterion. The Associated Press described service for most able-bodied South Korean men as “about 18 months” in its 2026 report. That is an approximate contextual figure, not a universal duration and not the service period for arts and sports personnel. (Associated Press report)
