Karlach’s Act One romance is initiated at the tiefling celebration; her Act Two relationship scene depends on completing both infernal-engine upgrades. Astarion’s romance can begin before or during that celebration, but his Act Two scene hinges on the Moonrise Towers conversation with Araj Oblodra—or an alternate quest-and-approval route—and the choice to treat his refusal seriously.
Karlach: start the romance at the tiefling celebration
Flirting earlier in Act One builds approval but does not, by itself, start Karlach’s romance. For example, after her first engine upgrade, telling her “Of course I do” when she asks whether you want to touch her earns approval; after the Paladins of Tyr encounter, calling her “Hot” also earns approval. These are approval-building examples, not required scene triggers. The approval reference lists the dialogue changes as derived from official dialogue files as of Patch 7.
At the tiefling celebration, the listed route requires at least 20 approval: tell Karlach you like her, then accept her invitation to spend time together. If you want her scene to be your first romance scene at the celebration, do not initiate another character’s scene first. The reference also describes a route when she is the second choice, provided you have no more than one other active romance. Existing partnership, insufficient approval, or too many active romances can lead her to decline. Karlach’s romance reference describes these conditions.
In the first scene, her engine has not been upgraded enough for physical contact. You can try a brief kiss, but it burns your lips. The same live reference flags an earlier night-visit trigger as bugged without mods, so the celebration is the practical initiation point described there; this trigger note is not a guarantee for every current game build.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Karlach: complete both engine upgrades in Act Two
To reach Karlach’s Act Two evening cutscene, continue the romance and complete both upgrades to her infernal engine. After the second upgrade, showing that it worked by touching or hugging her can also initiate the romance if it has not started already. The approval reference covers that interaction as well as approval-raising dialogue.
Larian Studios confirmed in its Patch 2 announcement that Karlach received additional moments in Acts One and Two and a new epilogue scene. Those additions are distinct from the specific approval and dialogue gates described in the community romance references.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Astarion: initiate the romance in Act One
Astarion has two Act One routes. Either can start the romance; his bite-night scene is not required.
| Route | Prerequisite and trigger | Choice that advances it |
|---|---|---|
| Before the celebration | Reach at least 40 approval before the Save the Refugees quest resolves. The next conversation can lead him to propose spending the night together; take a long rest for the scene. | Agree to his proposal. Astarion’s romance reference describes this route. |
| At the celebration | At the goblin or tiefling celebration, initiate the scene if relationship limits allow. | Agree to his proposal. If you already slept together before the party, agreeing again does not create another romance scene. The romance reference distinguishes this from the earlier route. |
Astarion: reach the Act Two relationship scene
The primary route is to bring Astarion when speaking with Araj Oblodra at Moonrise Towers. Respect his refusal and respond supportively; the follow-up conversation can then occur after a long rest. Pressuring him into sex or making him feel used can end the relationship instead. The scene is a choice point, not merely a location visit: how you respond determines whether the romance continues. The romance reference details the branches.

There is also an alternate route to a similar follow-up scene: visit Moonrise Towers, do not speak to Araj, complete “Kill Raphael’s Old Enemy,” and have at least 70 approval with Astarion. These are alternative conditions rather than extra requirements for the Araj route. The romance reference lists both paths.
Astarion: choose whether to become partners
In the second romantic cutscene, tell Astarion that you care about him to advance to the partnered stage. A friend response ends the romance without an approval loss, according to the approval reference, whose listed changes are based on official dialogue files as of Patch 7.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How current are these triggers?
Larian’s Patch 4 notes show that romance triggers have been adjusted in updates, but the cited romance change concerns Lae’zel, not Karlach or Astarion. The exact thresholds and scene branches above come from live community references, which may change; if a trigger does not occur, check the current game build and the linked references rather than assuming a dialogue choice guarantees a scene.
